Even though it's a cemetery, this is a beautiful park, good for solitude and walks. Also good for a simple picnic lunch. Some great Bay views.

Designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted (the same guy who designed Central Park). Many of the early movers and shakers of California are buried there.

Frederick Law-Olmstead designed many outstanding American parks. But this urban historical gem is right in our "backyard". Reviews of Mountain View Cemetery are all on point. In addition to the outdoor grounds, there are some amazing buildings that you can go inside and appreciate some remarkable architecture. Try the official walking tour first, then go back on your own -... More

We love walking here because it's (a) totally funky and cool, with sculptures and interesting pathways and gravestones, (b) close to Piedmont shops, and (c) dogs are allowed. There are cars passing through, slowly, so don't go letting your kids and dogs running free, but still it's a pretty serene spot.

This cemetery is a spectacular example of Olmsted's genius as a "park maker." This cemetery is, indeed, a beautiful and engaging park. It has been said Olmsted made "landscape an instrument of personal expression." In sum, the number one reason (among many reasons) I recommend a visit to this cemetery is to experience a great work of art by the... More

If you find yourself in Oakland and need a spot for some quiet reflection, check out Mountain View cemetery in the Piedmont neighborhood. Gorgeous old trees, beautiful views and poignant stories engraved in the tombstones. Architecturally and botanically interesting! And a great place to walk dogs.

I've been to a lot of cemetery's (creepy, nope I was an honor guard member) and this by far is my favorite city/county/private cemetery. It is a great place to walk and see the city. Some of the headstones and statues are simply amazing and beautiful.
