Don't miss this jewel

Arrive early for a live half hour pipe organ performance. Saving special old theaters like this is awesome. Don't miss it!

This cinema is located near Lake Merritt and many shops and restaurants so visitors can spend the day in this area. The movies are the usual box office films. What makes this place special is the old cameras and renovation. Also, the tickets are inexpensive if you go early in the day. Nice place for families.

What a lovely little movie theatre this is. Cheap for matinees every day. Great location. Comfortable roomy seating. Gets new movies very quickly after release.

This grand old place is getting a bit tatty, but you can't beat the place for its old charm, large screening rooms, and good location (near lots of good food and drink spots). They require cash, but the prices are less than your typical more-upscale, chain theatre. And if you want to start out with a meal or drink there... More

I was on my way home after traveling at Christmas time, and my son and I were looking for a place to go see the new Star Wars. In the reviews, this theater boasted the best 3D system in the Bay Area. They were right! Not only is the 3D much better than average, but the interiors and architecture of... More

I went there last Saturday to watch the Deadpool movie. The place is very pretty, the room that Deadpool played had an organ and a man played it before the movie started. Impressive.

The Grand Lake is an old-school theater right next door to Lake Merritt. The main theater is huge and the smaller side and upstairs theaters are cozy. All are beautifully decorated. All shows before 6 PM are only $6 and on Wednesdays they throw in a free small bag of popcorn. It's hard to beat a deal like that!

Not so favorable of a review for this theater.... sorry to say. A great history and a once-great theater that has been let go. A thorough cleaning and a little face lift would be a good start. Friendly staff- that's a true story. Can't complain about that but I think I would chose to go to another location for my... More

I've never been in an old theater like this before, and it didn't disappoint. I was embarrassing my boyfriend by taking so many pictures. I was surprised to see it in its original glory. The staff was very helpful and kind with a small mishap about the online tickets.

The Grand Lake is an Oakland icon and deservedly so. Although this movie palace has been subdivided into smaller theaters, it has retained an old world charm. The main theater is large and has an organ which they play on Saturday nights. Seeing a movie here feels exciting - like it did "back in the day".
