When traveling to Palm Desert, we alwYs take this highway. While is is winding through the mountains, the views at intervals are spectacular. It is always amazing to be in the mountains where there may be snow and tall pine trees and then reach the desert with palm trees.

We took this road accidentally and discovered there wasn't a lot to see, but my husband had to keep his eyes on the road anyway. It is very steep and curvy but there are a few stops where you can look back over the valley below. We live in a rural area and have many similar roads in our area....mostly... More

I drove it to visit friends who live in Idyllwild, CA. I started from Palm Desert. The mileage was only 44 but the drive itself took about an hour because you go from sea level to about 6000 feet.

You connect to Highway 74 off the I215 in Perris and head east, through the small towns of Romoland, Homeland and into Hemet. This section of road is no different than any other in SoCal. As you depart Hemet you start to climb into the mountains and the road becomes 2 lanes and curvy. You will pass Lake Hemet (a... More

We took this road as we traveled between Palm Springs and San Diego. It was longer than taking I-10, but more interesting. There are two overlooks that provide lovely views. Closer to Palm Springs was the Coachella Valley Overlook. The next vista was at Cahuilla Tewant Vista Point (which we found more scenic). The road takes you from palm trees... More

A mountain drive with beautiful views of the mountains and valley floor. Mostly two-lane with frequent turnouts to allow cars to pass. We were enjoying the scenery so much and didn't want to be rushed so we used the turnouts several times. Gorgeous scenery!!!

Compares to Phoenix to Payson drive in Arizona. You are taken from a desert landscape to lovely tall pines. It is mostly a two lane highway. Idyllwood has some shops and restaurants or places to grab a sweet treat.

Great views from this rotating tram! Lots of hiking trails at the top, too! A fun way to spend half a day.

If you get tired of the 90 - 100 degree heat in Palm Desert just take the drive up into the mountains via the Palms to Pines Highway. Within an hour you will find yourself in the town of Idyllwild. The first part of the drive from Palm Desert requires all the drivers attention to maneuver that take you us... More

Beautiful, but my kids and I were terrified by the switchbacks outside Palm Desert. After white-knuckling it among the hordes of crazy drivers, we turned around. If you are mortified by the potential for death by highway, this is not for you. Otherwise, it's gorgeous.
