In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France. In 1938, he traveled to France and returned with André Tchelistcheff, the famed viticulturist and innovative enologist. Tchelistcheff introduced cold fermentation for white wines, malolactic fermentation for reds and aging red wines in small, French oak barrels. He also insisted that the de Latour family's private Cabernet wine-"Private Reserve"-be bottled and sold as the winery's flagship offering. The result was the inaugural 1936 vintage of the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that was destined to become Napa Valley's first "cult" Cabernet. Today we continue to innovate to craft wines in our bold, classic style. We have become a leader in clonal research, and our BV Clone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are highly acclaimed. Most recently we completed a new state-of-the-art winery within one of our original buildings. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional, wine-the longtime benchmark of Rutherford Cabernet.

Enjoyed a wine tasting at Beaulieu Vineyard. We tasted most reds and enjoyed them. The staff provided excellent information about the vineyard and the wine. Good California wines but NOT the best.

The vineyard offered free welcome wine. It has great smell, but the quality of the welcome wine was okay, as it tastes more like water. That discourages us from the wine tasting there this time. The service in the welcome reception and gift shop area is excellent.

Our first winery on a couple of days in Napa. We have relished BV in the past, especially BV Rutherford. We had Brad serve us, and he was knowledgeable and fun to work with. We had the normal tasting and added in a taste of Georges De Latour at the end. The wines are delicious, the tasting room was cozy.... More

Yes it's expensive, but it is a pleasant time, and is not overly crowded with people just trying to get drunk. Also the wine is surprisingly good.

Most vineyards pour wines that are special versus what you can buy in the store. Not so here unless you pay $45 tasting fee to taste wines that sell in the $140-$200 range. MANY other places to visit that offer better value and better wine.

We visited this one and didn't enjoy it very much. The wine was just ok. The setting wasn't nearly as charming as family wineries that are all around you. It was really just walking into a store and tasting a little wine.

If you wish to have free wine tasting at Napa Valley, you can go to Beaulieu Vineyard. Their staff are very accommodating and pleasant. They explain the different types of wines and can even assist you in choosing the best one for your taste. They also sell other products such as wine-infused soap and cream. They also have items for... More

Located next to Rutherford Grill restaurant. This winery is focused on wine tours. Individual tastings don't get the same attention. I felt like I was at a time share appointment. The wine club was a hard sell by two different employees. Tasting fees are only waived for wine club members. If you buy a bottle of wine, the tasting fee... More
