OK, I am a train buff. I frequent railroad museums, and restored rail lines all over. Whenever, and wherever we travel, I will try to work in visits, if there is a rail attraction near-by. Though we have been to Sacramento several times, we were always staying near the Capitol, and seldom had time on our hands. On this day,... More

If you like trains, you will love this place. If you like history, you will love this place. If neither interest you, you may want to find a different place. The admission was $10/adult, which I thought that was reasonable considering other museums I have been to. My only negative thought, is the movie introducing the museum. It was good,... More

Although getting on in years, this museum is still the best in the U.S. (Strasburg, PA is a close second...) Unfortunately, the rotating exhibits this time didn't include my favorites -locomotives- as in years past, it is still good. A little noticed treat of the museum is a comprehensive collection of classic toy trains on the upper-most level of the... More

We've been to some really great train museums around the world (eg York in the U.K. and Mulhouse in France) and this museum is not anywhere in the leagues of those. However, as a smaller museum specialising in the US and Californian rail, it is still very good. We found the docents (guides) talked at a VERY basic level that... More

Such a special place. A train is just a train till you stand next to one of these classics. They are always exciting and even though we've been taking our grandkids here for ten years or so, there is always some new and exciting to keep you coming back.

If you're thinking "really a train museum?" You'll love it. Take the guided tour, it's free with admission, the docents are so good. They know everything & the tour is the expanded version if the movie. We spent several hours total, tour & looking around. Super fun & informative.

This is a great place for families, friends, or couples. Theres also plenty to do before or after you visit. Sure it may not be as big as some train museums but it is plenty exciting and worth a visit. The trains a neat to walk through and learn about from the gold rush to the passenger, to the freight... I am a 50+ year Sacramento native and know quite a bit about the region. The museum offers a treasure trove of historic photos, maps and memorabilia I have not seen elsewhere. I visited during Gold Rush Days so we were able to take a special guided tour. I found the archival news reels of the Old Sacramento redevelopment an... More

An excellently well presented museum. Lake Navada's state museum does not have a great deal of exhibits compared with UK's national museums. It does exhibit them very well. Great guided talk. Which is accurate and can not be faulted. Lighting a bit dark for pictures.

They've got some beautiful pieces in here: a gigantic "cab-forward" that used to haul freight and passengers over the Sierras, an old Pullman, some cool passenger cars, other engines, and beautiful displays of model railroad sets. My kids (ages 3, 5 & 7) loved it! It's also walking distance from the Sacramento train station, so if you're a die-hard railroad... More
