The bicycle trail is one small part of a 22 mile long green tree shaded parkway along the lower American River. The American River trail winds along the banks of the river from Old Sacramento east to Folsom Lake. There are improved parks along the way with restrooms, water fountains and picnic tables, all shaded by Sacramento's famous abundance of... More

The loop around Lake Natoma is over 20 miles; however, you can ride only as far as you want to and then return. There are multiple points where you start your ride. With younger kids it's good to know where the flat terrain is. For the more experienced, there are also many mountain bike trails as well. I used to... More

I try to find places where I can get in 30 to 40 miles without a lot of stopping. Since I am typically by myself, I prefer to find trails like this where I feel safe. I love riding on the road, but prefer it when I am familiar with the road. So - this seemed like the ticket. My... More

River's edge bike trail. Very smooth pavement that is wide enough for walkers and bikers. Mostly flat trail with slight inclines however no steep hills. The trail is lined with many trees that provide shade on parts of the trail. The trail also can accommodate 3 wheel incline bikes.

yesterday my wife requested that we bike the American River Bicycle Trail along with our 3 adult children. We packed the bikes up and proceeded to the multistory parking garage next to Old Sacramento (parking $10 for the day). Note: Low ceiling in the garage for anyone carrying bikes on top of a vehicle. We then went 1 block to... More

While it's a bike trail, my husband and I have only walked it. The trails are well maintained, and you see lots of wild flowers and wild life. Last time we were there, we saw wild turkeys crossing the trail. Every time we go, we get some great photo opportunities. We are from the Bay Area and only get there... More

The trail is excellent for those who wish to avoid auto traffic and like to cruise along at leisurely speeds. The curves are nice from an aesthetic standpoint - versus traveling on a straight path - but some of the curves have rather tight radii and therefore result in faster cyclists veering out of their lane. Also, much of the... More

If you ride along the river, be prepared to see "tent city" where numerous homeless people live. It is heartbreaking.

There is room for everyone - if you obey the simple posted rules of the road. I saw bikes, seated bikes, unicycle, tandem bikes, strollers, dog walkers, race walkers runners ... all ages. These trails are well maintained, and many sections include strategically placed picnic tables and parking. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen, though many sections are shady.
