This garden is about the size of a city block, I would say. The plants are mature and varied and well, tended. The pond is large and crescent-shaped, with very large, colorful koi and two bridges. There is a tea house and another, more rustic shelter. My four year old son loves this garden's winding paths, waterfall and stream, and... More

The Japanese Garden is tucked away in Central Park in downtown San Mateo. It is very cute but small. Not something you could make a day of and the tea house does not serve food - in fact it isn't even open for viewing. I think it is just a facade. However, the gardens are pretty but I wish there... I in the center a the city San Mateo, Central Park, you will find this nice Japanese garden. The garden has a very good layout with walk paths around the koi ponds. If you come at the right time you can watch feeding of the fish. The koi fish is big and in a lot of different colors. You will... More

Decently maintained Japanese garden with fish (I think koi) available. It is not on the scale of Golden Gate park's Japanese Tea Garden, but still pretty good.

It always seems busy and hectic once the day begins. To step aside and quietly feel the inner sense of being, a simple quiet, better yet, silent stroll through the Japanese Gardens in San Mateo or San Francisco can be such a transporting time.

This little spot has been around for decades. Perfect for a quiet slow walk. Meet an old friend. Take a young child to see the Koi. Always an artist or photographer. Great for both. Romantic couples, lunch hour diversions, solitary stroll...all welcome.

If you need to kill some time, stop in to see the giant koi. The Japanese Garden has a few pretty features, but we enjoyed the greater garden area outside of this part, especially the rose garden.

I went with my parents, and my 3 year old and we had a pleasant time at the garden. My 3 year old enjoyed crossing the bridges over the water features, and spotting the fish. I went on a weekday during the morning and it was pretty quiet. Not as spectacular as the San Francisco Japanese Gardens, but it is... More
