Overview

This zoo with a view was once a posh estate owned by a coffee and tea merchant; now it's the lush domain of more than 500 animals representing 160 species. The pink stucco mansion that once presided over manicured lawns and gardens is gone—replaced by open-air habitats built for the less refined but still exacting tastes of giraffes, elephants, gibbons, snow leopards and gorillas. What hasn't changed is the surrounding scenery; the Pacific and Santa Ynez Mountains are just as spectacular as they were back when this was the setting for civilized galas instead of the wild antics of monkeys and meerkats.

Everyone is so nice who works at the zoo. The zoo is clean but smells bad everywhere in comparison to the Ohio zoos. There are really gorgeous macaws in the zoo. There are also neat animal exhibits, just not a ton of animals at the...More

We stopped on the way from Santa Ynez Valley to LA. Clean, well-maintained exhibits and young, friendly staff. We saw animals out at every exhibit. Not sure if that was good luck or the norm. Very pleasant way to spend a couple hours on a...More

Lots of activities for kids. And actually most kids were not that interested in the animals. Good size not overwhelming. Close up views of most displays. Food choices very limited and not that healthy. We had a great time. Used Lyft to get to and...More

I visited the Santa Barbara Zoo for the first time with my 3 1/2 year old grandson this month. The zoo is beautifully situated and landscaped well. The playground kept him busy and it was creative. The animals are somewhat limited and the cages seemed...More

You can bring food in the park and there are some really nice grassy areas in the back of the park to set up a picnic and let the kids run around.
