I didn't know what to expect when we decided to visit the Matos cheese factory, having never tasted Portuguese cheese before, but it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip to Sonoma County. You drive down a farm track between fields of cows, pulling into the barn yard, replete with barn cat.. the shop is a... More

The other TA reviews accurately describe the 'cheese factory': working farm, dirt road, cows about (and cow doings!), tractors, and the cheese shop around the back by the barn. The St Jorge cheese is worth the trip, original or aged. Combine with a winery visit or two for a fun day.

They make two versions of the same cheese. One is aged 3 months and one is aged 8 months. They cost $9 and $13 per pound respectively. This is a great buy for some very tasty cheese. I would definitely recommend stopping buy and buying their cheese.

Want to step back in time? Make your way down the gravel road to the Joe Matos Cheese Factory. As you turn off the paved road in the middle of real farm country, you drive past grape vines, cows, chickens and various barns and out buildings. This is a real working family farm, no fancy gates or towering buildings of... More

I am very familiar with the "Sao Jorge" cheese, having milked a few cows there myself. Although I was skeptical it was a great surprise.. it is excellent! Just placed a second order. John S.

The place makes one type of cheese, Sao Jorge, which is originally from the Azores Island in Portugal, the cheese is strong so it is perfect for wines, If you're in Napa-Sonoma area you have to stop by and grab some cheese from here. We meet the owner, adorable Portuguese lady, and she gave us a tour in this little... More

You want cheese, barnyard, cows, a working farm? You got it! Drive down the long gravel driveway, past the field of cows and the house and pull up to the little store round back. i love this place. No pretentiousness, just walk in the door to the 4' X 8' area, stand at the counter, ask for a taste and... More

We came here to buy cheese because we have purchased it in the past from other cheese stores. We knew it was a quality product, and it is from my husband's family's island in the Azores. It was an adventure to find the farm, but please continue on and ring the bell on the factory door. The cheese is authentic... More

Follow the signs, then ring the bell (alarm). No frills, a lady comes out, and serves you. Get as much as you can afford or carry, since you will craving for it later, when it is all gone.

Matos St. George (or is it Jorge?) cheese has always been one of my favorites and taking the drive to purchase it straight from their farm yielded such a wonderful fresh cheese - way better than when you have to purchase it from a retail store. Yes, there are cats and pigs and cows roaming around BUT IT'S A FARM!!... More
