Gold miners first explored Moaning Cavern in 1851, but Native Americans had revered the site for centuries because of the haunting, moaning sounds coming from the entrance. Today, visitors enter by descending a metal spiral staircase or by rappelling by rope165 feet down. Or make reservations for an exciting three-hour Adventure Trip beginning with optional rappel. Above ground activities: gemstone mining, gold panning, free nature trail. School program available. Open every day, year round. We try to maintain our operational hours at Trip Advisor, but please see our web site for the most accurate information.

This is a quick tour but very interesting. Wear good shoes and make sure you can handle stairs. The site inside is pretty amazing to see. After, visit the little town of Murphys for a lunch. It is a quaint little town.

My stepson and I did the rappel 165 ft. down into the cave. It was our first time rappelling and it was an amazing experience. The staff was so knowledgeable, witty and we felt safe the whole time.

We have visited Angels Camp 4 times. Each time we saw pamphlets and ads for Moaning Cave. For some reason it sounded cheesy to me. Our grandkids were with us on this trip and were intrigued with caving. So, off we went. I was pleasantly...More

We chose this adventure because we were not interested in climbing thru a cavern or repelling down a cave. So going down a spiral staircase caught our interest. We walked into the main room to start our tour and I saw the repelling ropes and...More

The whole family enjoyed this experience. The spiral staircase was a hit with the kids. Mom found it a little unnerving, but it made it all the nicer to reach the ground below. Guide was great with a lot of knowledge about the formations in...More

We were the first tour of the day and ended up with a private tour of the cave. The number of stairs sounds daunting, but it was very doable. I am an active 58 year old, but not an athlete and was able to do...More

A great cave to explore with many impressive formations. The entrance to the cave is located inside the visitors center building. The descend starts with a few narrow passages (not suitable for those who feel uncomfortable in tight spaces) and then opens up to the...More

We've been staying in Angels Camp, CA and wanted something fun to do so we decided to check out Moaning Cavern. It's a 45-minute guided tour that incudes a 100-foot spiral staircase that leads down to 165 feet below ground. The formations in the cavern...More

Is there a weight limit to do this? Or a size limit? Age limit? How much per person?

I did not see a height or weight or age limit but I think that there ought to be an advisory notice that it is not suitable for people who struggle with mildly stressful exercise. I had a similar issue some years ago at... More
