Lots of Naval History. St. Peter's Chapel offers a tour from the museum of Tiffany glass windows. The chapel is beautiful and full of history.

I wasn't spwaking about Mare Island in geeral. I was speaking about Vallejo. I realize that it has fallen because of the 1995 closure. It used to be so special. I had to say that our visit was in 2016 even though it was 2015....More

Do you love Historical Architecture? Photography? Naval History? San Francisco Bay Area and California State History? With buildings dating back to the 1850's, you need to visit Mare Island Naval Shipyard!

Mare Island , seems like it could be such a great place but , it mostly has old rotted out naval buildings , not any water front and a great view from the Golf Course and driving range must be the best view of any...More

Mare Island is a really interesting place. You can go there and see all of the buildings that were used by the Navy during war time. You can also see some of the original housing used by officers. In addition, the hospital is still standing....More

The Navy gave the island to the City of Vallejo in 1996...The 515 ships built here are memorialized at the museums.. The Chapel and Victorian homes built in 1900's were built over the brick homes demolished during the 1896 earthquake.

Yes the hospital building is still there and you probably cannot tour it in person. However, I might be inclined to visit the yard anyway if in the area but things are totally different now on the island since its glory... More
