I reviewed this four years ago, and still think it is a great hike, but there has been a change in the routing and the trail has a slightly different character. The major change is that the trail has been rerouted away from the creek...More

We drove to this trailhead for the hike to the top. Amazing views of Keystone and Breckenridge from the top! And, as you ascend to the top, you walk through the prairie wildfires. I am not a professional hiker, so the final mile is a...More

Moderate trail from the summit of Boreas Pass Rd. Look for the old section house. There is a new route (built about 2015) that is a more gradual climb for the 1st half of the route. The fields of flowers are absolutely stunning in the...More

Stunning wildflowers along the early part of trail (normally best in early to mid-August). And then, stunning views at the end of the hike, after a longish slog through the valley. A good "moderate" level hike.

Black Powder trail is at the end of Boreas Pass, right on the Continental Divide. It has plenty of switch backs and steep in places. We heard something growl in the heather, but we had our dogs with us, so we just hurried on up.

This is a terrific hike about 30 minutes drive from Breckenridge. The paved Boreas Pass road turns to an easily driven dirt road which winds through a few narrow sections before opening on broad alpine meadows. Not maintained in winter, but easily passed in a...More
