We started in Cripple Creek in 4wd Ram Power Wagon. We did not need 4wd but it was good having a higher clearance vehicle. The road was not as bad as I was expecting. I will definitely take this road again as we missed a...More

We decided to take a short cut from Canon City to Cripple Creek. Low and behold we didn't know that "Unpaved Road" meant driving on the end of a one lane road up and down thru the mountains. Than we came upon the small bridge...More

About a year ago, we went to the Cripple Creek Heritage Center (a great visit if you haven't been there). In it were numerous displays, one on the dinosaurs discovered just south of Cripple Creek. We've lived in Colorado Springs for over 40 years and...More

Forget Royal Gorge, this is a must see drive. It's a dirt road and was in good enough shape that cars could do it when we did. Way off the beaten path, great views.

We traveled by car in August with 2 kids. The scenery was beautiful and I took lots of pictures. We wondered at first if we were on the right road! We picnicked on the finishing side and there was a table and vault toilets.

Where do I begin? This is both scary (I'm afraid of heights) and fun. It is a one lane dirt road thru some of the most beautiful views & rock formations in the area. There are a few pull over areas if another vehicle is...More

The two hours from Cripple Creek driving down this road was the highlight of our trip. The views were amazing. We saw lots of animals and although the signs said 4WD our rented Impala handled it all with ease. Drive this road and fall in...More

There is a dirt road just out of town with a small sign showing the name of the road (see picture). It is just past the RV park as you head out of town on Highway 67. The drive is about 1 hour (including a...More

Everyone said it was so scarey and others said it was a 4 wheel drive only road-wrong! The road had patches of washboard like any dirt road but otherwise it was just fine. The scenery was nice and yes it was high up but no...More

Go down to Cripple Creek, take a left on 2nd street and soon you will see a small white sign that says Shelf Road. It warns you at the entrance that they recommend 4wd high clearance vehicles, but if the weather is clear and the...More

Renee, another thing: If you plan to take Shelf Road, you'll want to ask exactly how to access it from Canon City. It's not hard, it's just that there aren't any signs directing you to it for some reason! And no matter which... More

I would imagine that the road is open in winter, since there is/are a house or two. However (and I should probably have used CAPS), first, I'd call Teller county roads dept. for conditions and secondly, I'd make sure I had... More
