A smaller two story museum in Durango, Colorado, which is housed in a former school from the old town of Animas City. It has several areas including a “Law and Disorder” room, a reconstruction of an elementary classroom, a display on the 50th anniversary of Purgatory Ski Resort, a room of Native American artifacts, and a three part video that... The docent was perfect! Met us at the door and started our tour in the "school room." 3 floors of history on Animas county - including the police and fire departments. Highly recommend!

Museum is located in a neighborhood in a building that was an old school. Entrance fee is $4pp with discounts for seniors, military and kids. The museum is small but interesting if you want to learn about the area. There is a replica of a school room and photos of other schools into the area, an area dedicated to the... More

Visited this museum on a whim. Very interesting was the first school in Durango. Two stories with lots of artifacts from around the area. There is also a cabin on site that was local in the 1900. It does have a 4 dollar charge to see.

Started the tour in the first school class room, desk included. Staff very knowledgable with facts. Several short DVD clips and display rooms. Not over bearing but very factual with wonderful photo's capturing the towns history. Worth the time!!

I'm a real history and museum buff. This old school building was beautiful to see. As an outsider, I was able to learn a lot about the history of the Durango area. There was a mock school room in addition to other rooms showing different aspects of the history of Durango. I enjoyed the many old postcards and photographs. There... More

Very inexpensive to enter. Lots to be learned about the Durango area. A classroom set up like the original one room schools and info about the early schools. Info about the fires that have occurred in Durango over the years. Most of the info was in the form of posters with a few spattered displays. Doesn't take long to go... More

One would think a historic town like Durango would have a history museum that really captured the flavor of the Old West. This museum is located in an early 1900s school, which is interesting in itself. Unfortunately, the exhibits are not all that great -- lots of stuff to read, but weak on the artifacts.

Loved this old school house museum, three floors of interesting Durango history and artifacts. The two docents were friendly and knowledgeable and recommended we continue with our plans to go to the various ruins in the area despite the weather and we did. The Joy House which is a authentic log cabin from the late 1800's made us grateful to... More

Very interesting visit. Well worth the time to go thru the museum. My 12 year old was fascinated by the old school rooms and the photos of the young students and the "rules" for both the teachers and the students.
