This fort has many original buildings and artifacts from its days as a Union fort. A short video in the theater starts your self guided tour and gives you an overview of what you will see and experience. Ghost sightings no extra charge! The Buffalo soldier room was a favorite of mine as I learned about the role of newly... More

Worth stopping to see if you are a history buff. Tour is self-guided and only takes an hour at the most. Well preserved and displays are explained in just enough detail.

Happened to come along this fort and happy we did. For a small fee, one can learn about the history of the soldiers that protected the western communities. The museum is very well done with authentic displays, pictures and artifacts. The tour is self-guided throughout the fort.

This is a gem of a museum hidden in the SanLuis Valley. It consistently improves it's offerings by brining in different shows and classes.

I love history and this is very historical. The museum includes many replicas of the civil war era in the area.

This is a must-see for anybody traveling in the San Luis Valley. The State Historical Society of Colorado has greatly updated the interior exhibits in the buildings and it is much more detailed than ever before. Allow at least an hour to be able to see all the different exhibits.

Have visited many times, never gets old if you love western history especially Colorado history. There is a fee of 5 dollars, a nice gift shop and LOTS of books. It is a self guided tour of the fort, some buildings are original and some rebuilt. You can see how life for the soldiers was. There is a short film... More

After visit Bent's Old Fort several hours east of Fort Garland, we decided to take a chance at another fort/museum visit. This one was also a great success. Self-guided tour, but the office/shop personnel are knowledgeable and can answer many questions. Several of the buildings are original, with restoration early in the last century, others completely rebuilt. Nice Kit Carson... More
