90% of the museum is outside, so be prepared. It's a self guided tour. There are a lot of photo opportunities with many trains.

I grew up looking at my father's steam engine books as a child. Despite having the love of trains instilled in me at a young age, the Railroad Museum was somewhat of a disappointment. If you like looking at old, stationary, trains you may enjoy the museum because they have many trains to look at just out in the yard.... More

Most of the exhibits were closed for maintenance so it left us with very limited options when it came to looking at the trains. In addition, its right across the street from a water treatment plant which leads to quite nauseating smells whenever the wind shifts. That's not really their fault of course but it made a disappointing experience that... More

You'll not find another place with so many trains to explore, climb on and walk through. The big engines are really big. The small trains are tiny. And the specialty trains are really special. If you love trains, this is the place of your dreams.

was here on vacation thought we would stop and take in some of the local sights. this shouldn't have been one of them. their "train" ride is 2 laps around a yard, not fun, the museum is old, not much interactive activities for the kids. it just wasn't a place for kids.maybe if your a train nut its great but... We had a hard time getting my sons (ages 6, 8, 10, 13) to leave because they loved this place. In the basement, there is a huge toy train exhibit. Outside, you can walk inside of every train car imaginable.

Fun place to spend an afternoon if you're a fan of history, trains, or have a child who is into Thomas and Friends. We took our grandson and had to drag him away after many hours exploring. Unpretentious and refreshingly authentic.

We took our granddaughter here - she's almost 4 - and we all loved it. I can't say for certain but it appears to be a private museum - not government funded. Many volunteers keep things running (the train rides that they periodically run around their site). Volunteers also maintain the donated trains. This facility is popular with families with... More

Jerry, Thank you very much for taking the time to visit the Museum and to leave a review. I can confirm that the Museum is a private museum owned and operated by the 501(c)3 Colorado Railroad Historical Foundation and we are fortunate enough to have a group of over 300 volunteers that contribute their time throughout the year! I hope... More

Such a gorgeous day, let's go to the train museum! Wow, price has gone up. Less trains to go into. Now you have to pay for the H O scale trains downstairs of go around. Not much fun with so many limitations. Perhaps it is due to the time of year.

Nancy, Thank you for visiting the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, CO and for taking the time to leave a review. The museum keeps a number of railroad cars and locomotives open to the public year round including engine cabs with bells that can be pulled by children. Unfortunately, due to damage caused by unsupervised guests we currently restrict access... More
