I did the north side trail head. Overall, a nice hike that will indeed give you the body and lung work out. Once out of the trees, the trail gets even steeper. The views are grand and meeting lots of great people make this a...More

This mountain is highly accessible, and has several well established trails to get to the top. We underestimated the impact of the altitude, which slowed us down considerably. If you're coming from low altitude like we were, don't try to tackle this peak until you're...More

We had an awesome time climbing this peak on a 13 mile round trip from the Lake View Camp grounds area. Note that this is not an easy climb and we saw many unprepared hikers. Start early and bring lots of water! Must be below...More

Many people use the North Trailhead to get to Mt. Elbert. The South Trailhead from the Twin Lakes area is slightly easier. Best to start at dawn if not sooner if you are a slow hiker or just like to take it all in and...More

Went to the top of Mount Elbert with my two teenage kids aged 16 and 13. We went up the northeast trail. Coming from sea level in Houston, Texas it was a tough hike at altitude but worth it. We arrived just before 7:00 am...More

A great Class 1 Fourteener for anyone who wants to bag the second highest peak in the lower 48. The trailhead parking lot has bathrooms for men and women and is well maintained. The hike to the tree line is well worn with switchbacks. Make...More

Good hike, terrain was easy, just the elevation a challenge to me. Crossing the 4000m I started to have problems with breathing, every 10m elevation difference I had to take break to take a breath. Otherwise, the scenery was spectacular, beautiful landscape all around...

Hiked Mount Elbert with 4 buddies. Was a very long day but an excellent hike. Our route took us up the Northeast ridge via the standard route, down the Southeast ridge and back to the original trailhead via the Colorado trail. Just over 13 miles...More

I wore Salomon trail running shoes, shorts and two top layers. Put sunscreen on at the tree line. And wear a hat. Pack light but with enough water and some nutrition.

That is strictly a matter of your pace, of course. The easiest, hence the quickest, route up is the Northeast Ridge route ("From U.S. 24 just south of Leadville, turn onto Colorado 300 and cross the railroad tracks. Drive... More
