Over the years, I have stopped here several times. This year, I actually knew there was a train coming. I had a very hard time accessing the west portal, not even sure if I was supposed to be where I was to photograph a train. I know I wasn't on railroad property, but wasn't sure if it was public property... More

I have been coming to this train site since the 1960's. It is so utterly AMAZING to hear the heavy rubber curtains drop and the fans start up in the under mountain tunnel. By doing this, the tunnel is closed off and the fans in the tunnel can push fresh air in front of the train and get rid of... More

Winter Park/ Mary Jane ski areas are the only ski areas in North America serviced by train. This is the way to "see" the Moffat tunnel. Amtrak also goes through the tunnel from Denver or Fraser.

West Portal is a great history story but realistically, not much to see. On the other hand if you take the train you will be treated to incredible views and of course the ski resort is right there at West Portal. Good history and I understand the passenger service is expected this coming ski season which should be welcomed by... More

What a great way to see history and a 360 view of the mountain range. This was my 1st Colorado hike in the Mountains. Being from Indiana, I didn't think the hike was too bad. This was my ultimate favorite trailhead.

We were onboard the California Zephyr as we passed this momentous place. Fantastic history and we were aboard part of the history we were observing.

Pretty cool seeing a tunnel entrance that is so old but their is really nothing special about this as an attraction. You view it from a parking lot. Maybe I missed the historic marker. It is cool. There is a lot of fence to keep people back and to interrupt a photo.

A landmark rather than a visitor's attraction? Noticeable as trains enter and exit the tunnel and best seen from the slopes. We usually fly into DIA from the UK, stay in downtown Denver overnight and take the free mall ride on 16th Street to Union Station to catch the 8.05 am Amtrak Californian Zephyr train up to Fraser for our... Great simple food. Hits the spot. Chicken steaks and chips after a hard morning riding the slopes. Clean simple food freshly cooked.

As a visitor, it may not be apparent initially that Moffat Tunnel serves as a trailhead for a lot of great hiking in the James Peak wilderness area. What makes Moffat Tunnel so great is that the parking lot is well maintained even in the winter, since it is an active set of tracks. This means the road up to... More
