Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America....

Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

I'm not huge into arts but this museum is so impressive. It's one of my favorite places on campus. It's free! Yes, free. Not sure where else you can view such a beautiful collection without paying a fee. I look forward to visiting again in the near future.

Be sure to learn where each of the three elevators take you. This museum is worth a multiple day visit.

We specifically went to see the Lumia exhibit when we visited, and were fascinated with the beautiful changing patterns of light and the fact that its creator,Thomas Wilford, had started working with this medium as early as 1919. We then visited some of the other collections and I was specifically thrilled to see the excellent collection of contemporary art from... More

For a collection belonging to a university, this museum offers an amazing breadth and depth. Is it the Met? No - but it is accessible, interesting, and free. A great place for adults to spend time or to introduce young people to various styles and eras.

The YUAG has a bit of everything: ancient, modern, east, west, partially set in a Luis Kahn building. And it's free. Perfectly sized, great for kids. Seriously, if you're visiting New Haven put this on your list.

When I think of a University art museum, the Yale Art Gallery is not what I imagine. Yale's art gallery is by any measure a full fine arts museum filled with a substantial and important collection of works by old and recent masters from Europe, America, and the east. 4 floors of beautiful and spacious display space will take you...
