Members of Manatee Eco Tourism Association, Better Business Bureau, and Citrus County Tourism Division. Owned by Bill (Bird) and Diana Oestreich

since 1993. Bill "Bird" and Diane Oestreich moved to Crystal River in 1989 and began teaching scuba diving and offering manatee snorkel tours. At that time there were only 3 hotels, one independent shop, and about 100 manatees that came to Citrus County in the winter months. Since then, Manatees have increased to over 1000 manatees in Citrus County alone in the winter, and there is an average population of about 35 manatees that remain in Kings Bay in the summer months. The Manatee Awareness Program was set up by Bird and Diana Oestreich in 1990 with the dive agency NAUI, then PADI, and now SDI offers the same program. They offer quality and personalized manatee tours with experienced and insured boat captains, all of which are at Divemaster level or higher. Manatee Tours average about 3 hours, but they do not have a set time in which they "pull" the customers out of the water in order to run another tour. All tours include drinks and snacks. Private tours include a full meal. Bird's Underwater Dive Center is located on the Kings Bay of Crystal River. You do not have to drive to a separate location to be on the water. Bird's Underwater is located on the dock behind the Dockside Trading Company. We are next to Charlies Fish House restaurant, and walking distance from Crackers restaurant. The Dockside Deli is located in the same parking lot. Main Street or Citrus Avenue is 2 blocks to the south, the Crystal River Mall is 1/4 mile north.

Husband, myself and our 11 year old went on the manatee tour yesterday. We had Captain Paul and Brittany on our boat and it was absolutely amazing. We saw about 5 manatees, one of which was in extremely clear water. They were both very knowledgeable and were very accommodating with our munchkin, making sure she was able to see them.... More

One of the best experiences in our lives! Captains Glenn and his mate were able to find 8 manatees despite very unpredictable mid of April date. We spent over an hour in water swimming in close vicinity of the manatees. Those animals are awesome and our captains were giving us great advise on how to enjoy those rare moments. Definitely... Hubby & I rented kayaks after watching a short video. Easy to use, very friendly staff. A little crowded in three sisters cove but water was calm. I would have been very disappointed to not have seen a manatee but fortunately after an hour or two we did get to see one close up. 😉

These gentle giants are so peaceful; we had a wonderful time swimming with them. This was a special kind of adventure, just snorkeling in the warm waters of the Three Sisters Spring. Recommend it to families.

I joined one of the early morning Bird's Underwater manatee snorkeling group trips on April 9, 2017. Steve was our boat captain and Brittany was our dive guide. They provided spot-on instruction regarding the importance of respect for the welfare of the manatees and this fragile environment. Brittany's detailed background conversation on the manatees and features of Crystal River added... More

We had an awesome first time experience swimming with manatees! Everyone was so friendly at check-on, and the staff even presented Mom with a Birthday hat and candle on a sprinkled donut! Rob and Mike were fantastic guides and definitely have passion for manatee preservation. We learned a lot about the manatees and they are truly amazing to observe. We'll... More

We brought our 14 and 7 year old children for an adventure and we got one. Lucky for us it was a chilly morning which means the manatees came in from the Gulf. It was also lucky for us that we were with Capt Steve, who can spot a manatee a mile away, and Brittany, who is an official manatee... More

If you want to see a lot of manatees, go in late winter-early spring. They come in to the warmer inland waters when it is cold in the Gulf. We took a chance in early April and decided on the 6:30 am "swim with the manatees" tour. It had been hot, so we were aware that manatees may be difficult... More
