As others have stated this is not a great swimming location but for young kids is well protected without waves thus great for that age group. Snorkeling also requires one take the boat to the reef else will see little if anything. Kayaking is very nice thru the mangroves however. There is also a very nice walk thru aquarium and... More

Upon arrival we were warned that winds were 20mph and the waves were 1-1.5 feet high and that we needed to be good swimmers. We were told that it would be a workout. So, we were absolutely warned that the conditions were not ideal. We should have listened because the waves were definitely challenging. 4 out of the 6 people... More

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff make the 40 minute boat ride out to the reef enjoyable. You can rent or buy all the equipment you need. The reef is diverse and accessible to snorkelers of all experience levels. Plan on 3-4 hours, minimum.

This is a great state park if you have plans to snorkel, kayak, boat tour or launch a boat. The beaches, as are all beaches on the keys, are man-made, fairly small, not in the main ocean (more on the sound) and have coral sand beaches. You might be better off in your hotel pool. BUT if you intend to... More

Thank you for the nice review. Yes, most beaches in the Keys are "man made", as such, not sandy. Our sister concession at Bahia Honda is recommended for the beach experience. Presently, there are plans on the drawing board for a new and much larger visitor facility complex. Sadly, Pennekamp Park, despite annual attendance and interest, has fallen far behind... More

My guess is that John Pennekamp is a great park for camping, snorkeling, scuba, kayaking, etc. Taking my young family there, it didn't suit our needs very well. The two 'beaches' were small and not very ideal for my family. The sand was coarse and there were a lot of rocks by the water. I would highly recommend wearing aqua... More

Thank you for the review. Monroe County taxes fifty cents per person as an "impact fee". The State Park Fee is used universally so there is no disclaimer bout local add on's. All in all, still a pretty good deal for entrance to a Florida State Park. The focal point of the Park is the offshore reef, not the land... More

We stopped here to do the snorkeling trip to the reef. We had a perfect day weather wise and water was pretty calm. Crew was great and organized. We did the noon trip and went to Molasses Reef. Apparently the earlier excursion went to the other reef and visibility wasn't good. I was glad the captains share the conditions because... More

Our family was staying in Miami for our vacation and were looking for something to do. We found the state park online and decided to check it out. It was amazing it was very reasonable even for out of state visitors to get into the park. We also were able to go kayaking and on a glass bottom boat tour.... More

Winds created big waves in the atlantic so we could not snorklel. Kayaking is very in expensive and a great time in a beautiful place. My only suggestion is if you have young kids 13 or younger, don't let them take a double kayak out themselves. We saw a lot flipped over and they had a hard time getting back... More

Nice park. We didn't get to see much of it. What I did see was pleasing to me. Parking was tight, but accommodations were at least adequate for a crowded weekend
