    Spring break Key West 2023
We are on the island for my sons senior spring break. He and his friend wanted to tour the house. We paid for a tour guide. It was so informative! We got to see lots of beautiful cats. Lots were very friendly and wanted attention.

Love the Cats but Rude and Harassing Tour Guides Made for Bad Memories for My Family
My family really enjoyed the grounds and the cats. I have no complaints there at all. It's certainly worth the time and admission fee. My kids can't stop talking about the cats and showing the pictures they took to others. My issue is with the staff, one in particular. We opted for the self guided tour. Since we were not part of the group with the tour guide, we were repeatedly asked to leave the rooms and not in a very polite manner. She was blunt and rude as if we were non paying visitors and only the participants of the tour mattered. This same tour guide thought it appropriate to yell at me and my children as she was leading her tour downstairs. There was a cat on a chair that I tried to pet. Obviously, the cat wasn't having that at the time and swatted at me. This was one time, not continuing. The tour guide saw this brief interaction and decided to reprimand me, LOUDLY and in front of her entire tour, for bothering the cat and to not "encourage her". Seriously? I attempted to pet the cat one time and was told no (by the cat). How was that encouraging her? We observed the cat for a few minutes and enjoyed to balcony porch. The tour guide was below and apparently more concerned with us than her tour as she continued to glare up at us. My young son tried to pet the cat when I was turned away ( as kids will ) and she again yelled at us to leave the cat alone. She then continued to glare up at my family while texting angrily on her phone, completely ignoring her tour. I felt like she was harassing my family. We have four cats at home, my family is not new to feline behavior. We were not provoking the cat in any way. I felt that the tour guide's actions were excessive and very rude. If she had concerns with this cat- maybe there is a history, she could have communicated in a different demeanor. We tried to avoid her and her tour for the remainder of our time there which is difficult in some ways as it's only so big. It was very bothersome to be treated so rudely and be harassed by a staff member, especially when we weren't doing anything wrong. I've never been treated like that anywhere. It will unfortunately be part of our family memories of coming to the Hemingway House.

Great History Lesson about Hemingway and Key West
Must see! Our tour guide Scott was great. Highly recommend to go through with a guide. All the information gave us a better appreciation for Key West. I recommend this to do first thing if you are doing a day trip. We had two of our teenagers with us and they loved it. Looking for and interacting with the Hemingway cats was fun too. Tour is 30 min, but you are free to roam the grounds afterward. There are clean bathrooms and a bookstore onsite. Make sure you have cash to get in.

    A step back in time
Thoroughly enjoyed walking around this home. We felt like we had stepped back in time. Learning more about Hemingway's life and how he used that for his writings was interesting. Seeing the six-toed cats and the urinal from the original Sloppy Joe's was fun!

    Terrific Museum on Hemingway
A very popular tourist attraction we were anxious to visit the Hemingway Home & Museum. Having read many of the Hemingway books and biographies of this unique man, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Hemingway Home & Museum. On our Olde Trolley Tour on a Tuesday, we passed the Hemingway Home & Musuem to see a line from the front porch and winding outside and around the walls of the home. When cruise ships are in port, the lines are long to the top attractions. Learning this from a visit to the Butterfly Gardens, we were smart and glad to visit the Hemingway Home & Museum both earlier in the day and on a day when no cruise ship was in town. Arriving a little before 11:00AM we were efficently signed up for the next house tour at 11:15AM. Our guide, Liz, gave us a great tour home the home, details of Hemingway's life and times, and education on the six toed cats. A great tour with plenty of information and intrigue as we strolled through the various rooms and buildings of the Hemingway Home & Museum. Be prepared the six toed cats are found everywhere. Usually, sleeping and relaxing. We saw Joe Dimaggio sleeping on the dining room table. As we toured Hemingway’s bedroom, Liz removed the pillows to find a cat sound asleep behind them. The home is well kept with plenty of original memorabilia wherever possible. Later we strolled the grounds and learned more about this amazing and intriguing writer. A beautiful home and museum where we gained a lot insight into Hemingway and his life. A must see on any visit to Key West.

    Unique Attraction in Key West
The Ernest Hemingway house is a must-do attraction in Key West! It was a unique experience and fun to see the 6-toed cats running around the property. The only reason I didn't rate this 5 stars because its a little pricey. My husband and I paid $40 to walk around his house and see see the cats outside. It only took us about 30 mins to take some pictures and then leave. Some of the gardens were not accessible due to staff setting up for a wedding at the property later that day. Overall, it was a fun experience!

    Interesting Tour
Must see in Key West. The guided tour was very interesting. It gets a little crowded so the best time to go may be first thing in the morning or at the end of the day. Hemingway was an interesting character!

Much better than I thought it would be
Tour was recommended by a friend. Frankly I wasn’t sure I was up for a guided tour in a crowded house on a hot day but decided to give it a go. Glad I did. Several points to note: a) our guide was Sarah and she was excellent - know the facts and kept it light and fun and encouraged the group to stay on longer and tour by ourselves if we wanted to get into more details, b) tour is only 30 mins long and provides enough insight to make you want to spend some additional time at the house, c) fun seeing all the cats (and I am not a big cat lover), d) fans in the rooms provide sufficient cooling and e) it’s cash only (was $18 per person when we were there), f) even though it seemed crowded at the gate it wasn’t too crowded inside.

    **A Key West Must See**
We ended our Caribbean cruise in Florida with a 4 day stay in Ft Lauderdale and a day trip to Key West. It's a 4 hour drive, but when you're a Hemingway fan, you gotta go see the Hemingway Home And Museum. A tour lasts about an hour. The tour guides are very knowledgeable of Hemingway's life and want you to ask questions. There is a sense of pride in showing off artifacts and pictures and the cats throughout the home. I really enjoyed it and consider this trip crossed off on my small bucket list!

    The Old Man and the....cats?
The guided tour was a bit pricey, but worth it. I have a degree in writing and am a Hemingway fan for decades, and still learned details from his life that I was unaware of. Go early, because there is no a/c during most of the tour.

Wonderful House that was even featured in a James Bond Movie. The great writer has been enjoyed by fans across the years. What was a total surprise was the 6 toed cats. We love Cats so this was a huge bonus.

This Key West visit was in March 2023, I was going to enter the Ernest Hemingway House and Museum until I learned there were over 50 polydactyl (6 toed cats). According to one visitor we met leaving the museum, she said the cats were everywhere you looked inside. I’m afraid of cats so this visit was off my itinerary, thereby 3/5 rating. I was disappointed.

However, I did get some great pictures of the house 5/5. The yard is lush with tropical plants and a tall fence surrounds the property. It’s located at an intersection, so you can view all sides of the upper 2 story house. The museum admission entrance allows you access full vantage points.

The side of the property we walked by had a delivery entrance and the cutest free book stand. Key West is definitely a walkable town with great sites to visit and amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean.

It was very interesting to visit Hemingway’s home. We went on a 30 minute guided tour and learned some interesting facts about Hemingway’s life. I saw some people went on unguided tours but I would highly recommend going with a tour guide to learn more about Hemingway’s life. Price was reasonable and my teen daughter got student discount. It was cool to see all the cats who still live at the house.

Not sure what all the hype is about - thought it was kinda boring. Maybe it’s because we missed the guided tour because it was too busy. Admission price is a rip off in my opinion - somebody in the Hemingway estate is laughing all the way to the bank.

We took an Uber from our hotel to visit but left when we saw the line to enter stretched an entire block. We resolved to find a better time to return. Next day, different time, same issue. We decided to wait and were glad as the line moved quickly. Inside, we wandered on our own, checked out the cats and relaxed in the outside gardens. This experience can be completely casual, exploring on your own, or joining a group tour. You can stay as long as you like and make this experience your own. Recommend.

Our family didn’t know a ton about Ernest Hemingway before visiting but we knew this was a big deal in Key West. We actually really enjoyed the visit and are glad we went. We followed along with the tour group through the main house and then walked on our own once it went outside. His writing studio and the pool were definitely highlights.

This was my husband's idea - and I am glad he insisted. It was completely worth it. The tour guides were all excellent. The grounds were lovely. I loved learning about his life, his wives, his friends and even his 6-toed cats. Surprisingly, my 16yo also enjoyed the visit! He listed it as one of his favorite activities in Key West.

If you love Hemingway -- or if you barely know anything about him -- this is worth the visit. Beautiful property. Adorable cats. Great history of the home and the area. A bit too commercialized, but it's still worth the time to see and appreciate.

Interest and experience with all things Hemingway brought us to Key West. What a privilege to spend time in the Hemingway house and on the grounds, and to view his writing studio (roped off). The tour is worthwhile, and then you have unlimited free time to wander wherever you’d like. The property is serene and creatively inspiring, well maintained. The home is spectacular. Go early, and don’t miss the many signposts with great info throughout the grounds - photograph them to reference later. Photographers and painters will be inspired. 1 to 2.5 hrs easily spent depending on your level of interest.

Cons? Would appreciate time to ask questions during the tour or at an info stand. The cat shtick is unnecessary and overdone well beyond what is authentic to Hemingway. A lot could be added to interest and educate guests on Hemingway’s life and family, if less time was spent talking about cats. Gift shop is nice, but I purchased 6 hardback books from the bookstore in town, because I wasn’t a fan of the large gold foil (Hemingway House) sticker being added to the front cover of the gift shop books - consider including stickers in the bag and let the purchaser affix them where they prefer.

Overall, a great job. I hope they will continue to develop an engaging and interactive Hemingway experience.
