The Great Calusa Blueway is NOT the Sanibel Causeway. That is the road that takes you into Sanibel. The Great Calusa Blueway is the waterborne route to take up and down the Gulf Coast from barrier island of the coast of Bonita Springs up to Cape Coral. It includes Pine Island, Captiva, Sanibel and many other areas. We spent some... More

The bridge hops a few small pieces of land where you can stop and picnic, fish, or relax. The toll is only on the lanes headed to the island and it costs 5 dollars to cross it with a two axle vehicle. It's pretty but again it's basically a bridge.

This beach is not Bowman's but many locals come here to watch the sunset, no paid parking here. Can be a bit rocky to walk in the water, but if you just want to get your feet wet not bad at all.

Although we did really enjoy the scenic drive, it was costly to go onto the island then pay the parking at the beaches which were sort of difficult to navigate for a first time explorer. We did find some nice shells. The water was mucky and still. Not my favorite.

This is the most beautiful drive and it rivals the 7 Mile bridge to the Florida,Keys. You can stop along the way and simply pull off the road to enjoy the scenery, fish or have a picnic.

We wanted to go kayaking on the blueway, but were really disappointed when we finally got there. There didn't seem to be anything to see, except the mangroves you can see from shore. The marina we stopped at for information, that was listed on the map, didn't even know what the blueway was!

Really beautiful waters - check out the dolphins! The Great Calusa Blueway goes on and on - a real treat for those that wish to paddle through the mangroves. You might also get lucky and spot a manatee! Plenty of bird watching to be done here as well - Bald Eagles, egrets, herons, osprey, etc. We really enjoyed our trip... More

I have traveled by boat from Canada to the Keys, and there is no prettier place than the 100 miles that comprise the Great Calusa Blueway. Generally calm waters, abundant wildlife, undeveloped islands and scenic vistas make paddling in this area a delight.

This is the entrance to Sanibel and is absolutely beautiful. We watched the sunset here on a few nights. The fossilized shells are really neat too! We saw more dolphins off of the causeway than anywhere else during our stay!

We took our own kayaks and kayaked the trail, which is about 1- 1 1/2 long, depending on your kayaking aptitude and how much you want to explore the mangroves. When we were there the tide was coming in, so the way in was more like a lazy river with easy paddling. On the way back, there were a few... More
