My husband and I stayed at Tawau Hills Nature Park for 5 nights with 1StopBorneo and it was a great decision. The team; Shavez and Chun are very knowledgeable of the wildlife in the area from the small insects to the primates. Their spotting is fantastic and the Tawau Hills is full of life. We strongly recommend staying in the park as you can see soo much just hanging around the accommodation from red leaf monkeys and gibbons to hornbills and kingfishers, huge monitor lizards, insects, the list goes on and on. You go to bed and awake to the sound of the jungle..it is a beautiful experience. The team is full of enthusiasm and their motivation in conservation work is highly recommendable. They also combine these trips with visits to Oil Plantation areas that are working to protect and help Elephant survival where there is a good chance to see these majestic beauties. On top of all this they also do a trip to mangrove areas to spot great bird life and if luck shines as it did for us, dolphins may come along as well. We stayed at the Park accommodation which is run by the Park itself. Accommodation is comfortable but would be perfect with some hot water for showers since there is electricity 24 hours a day anyway. I would recommend a 3 night stay minimum. We stayed 5 and felt it was just right. We could have easily stayed longer. It is a hidden jewel off the beaten track.

Tawau Park Hill is one of the best places where to see wildlife in Borneo. From your accommodation you can easily see monitor lizards swimming in the little lake, observe red leaf monkeys "screaming" on the trees, hornbills flying from tree to tree...!! But not only, they have a lot of excursions: you can see a lot more of wildlife, elephants (if you're lucky) and dolphins... wonderful! I would like to recommend also the two amazing guys of 1Stop Borneo, Shavez and Chun, you can feel their deep love for wildlife and nature: it's a pleasure to listen to their explanation about little insects, animals and plants. They're not only guides, they're researchers, writers and founders of projects aimed to protect the wildlife and support the local communities. Definitely I would like to recommend a visit at Tawau Park Hill at least for 2-3 days, the time you need to discover a bit more the nature and wildlife and enjoy !

Myself and my husband visited Tawau hills with 1StopBorneo in Jan 2020 for a weekend trip from KL. They organised all transport for us from the airport and the process was really smooth. As we only had a couple of days Shavez and the team were really flexible in adjusting itineraries for us. What is great about the location, is that there is so much wildlife really close by to the accommodation so you don't have to spend hours trekking in sweaty jungle to get to see things. At night we headed out on a night walk and saw all kinds of nocturnal insects and reptiles and Shavez knew all the best places to spot things. We saw snakes, lizards, tarantulas, hundreds of beetles and insects, frogs and even a giant toad. The following morning we were woken by the sound of gibbons right outside our window which was awesome. We spent the morning following and watching the different gibbon groups, we were the only ones there - it felt really special to get to spend so much time with these amazing animals. The same thing with lots of hornbills, just getting to take time to watch them up close was great. Next we headed to the nearby plantation to do some tree planting and on an elephant safari. The safari was briliant and we got to see a number of different elepants, even a baby. As we were leaving the plantation at night we also saw a group of around 20 elephants close to the road. Shavez and the team were brilliant, super knowledgable and personable. Their enthusiasm for their work is so refreshing and it is great to see guides get as excited about seeing wildlife as you are as a tourist. Their work in conservation and seeking out solutions for wildlife to thrive even in areas you wouldn't expect them to, is highly commendable. Definitely recommend this off the beaten path gem.

Tawau hills park is amazing place to see wildlife in Borneo. Treks with 1StopBorneo Borneo dedicated team has been wonderful and unforgettable. The team is great and knowledgeable and will point out all the amazing creatures of this forest. All are like treasures of the park. The nighttime forest is so full of life, which really make so much logical sense for the survival of each creature making sure they keep themselves safe in the day and the night feasting happens when the sun goes down. We recorded some sounds of the forest on our treks, these sounds are replaying in our heads now that we are back In the city. . The guys at 1stop borneo are amazing! the Plant4Borneoelephants initiative with sabah softwood to rewilding a wildlife corridor of the former plantation land to encourage and restore biodiversity of the former plantation land is really inspiring effort. The tree planting experience Is really inspiring and yet humbling. We were lucky to be able to see the family of elephants and the lone male elephant separately. We hope the wildlife corridor will become just as biodiversified in a few decades from now. Really hope more plantation companies can do the same as SSB did. Every effort and intent counts, support 1stop Borneo team and sabah soft wood with the rewilding efforts to the wildlife corridor. Choonheok Singapore

We (myself & my husband, slightly older than your usual travellers) arranged a 4 night trip with Shavez to stay in Tawau Hills Park including climbing to camp at Mount Lucia. Organising the trip with Shavez was easy & efficient by email. He made useful suggestions about what we may like to do on our trip. Our highlight was a day where we met the charming Chun (hope I have spelt this correctly) who accompanied us on a small fishing boat which went out in the sea to look for dolphins. We spent roughly 3 hours out and saw both Irrawaddy and another light pink larger dolphin - with the help of a local guide. We were then taken to a softwood & palm oil plantation that 1st stop Borneo work with to protect the Pygmy elephants. We had a very tasty lunch at the plantation and then were encouraged to plant some trees for the wildlife corridor on the plantation. It was such a positive feeling to think we are helping the elephants and other animals for the future. We then were driven around the plantation in search of the elephants. We probably drive for around 3 hours, and as well as seeing a group of around 20 elephants, which was awesome, we thoroughly enjoyed seeing the trees on the plantation & how much of a community there is inside the plantation. By the time we made it to Tawau Hills accommodation we were exhausted. We would thoroughly recommend this day to anyone in the Tawau area. The accommodation at Tawau Hills Park was basic. The park is fabulous and very few visitors. We had a lot of rain in the afternoon which meant a real treat for our night walk - so many species of frogs were easy to find at the nearby pond. The noise from them was unbelievable. Our hike to Mount Lucia (about 5 hours) was hard & hot with quite a few leeches. But other than park guides we only saw a few people on there way back down from the camp so we felt very privileged to be able to enjoy the beauty in such quiet surroundings. The primary rain forest in stunning. The Mount Lucia camp is very basic & i didn’t enjoy staying in the camp particularly. But the walks from the camp were amazing. The remote feeling was fabulous. The food was excellent - many thanks to Shavez’s lovely helper - her first time at the camp & first time cooking for guests. There was filtered water to drink and snacks as well. Shavez & Chun are extremely knowledgeable and we learnt a lot. They are both excellent at finding wildlife, particularly birds. They taught us much about the rain forest and how important the interaction between the trees & wildlife can be. Thank you 1ststopborneo for showing us how beautiful Tawau Hills Park & the local area is.
