We booked our tour ahead of time, expressing an interest in architecture, and to provide an overview of the city so that we could explore the city during the following week with a plan that would include most of the things that would interest us. Elaine spent two hours on a cold morning taking us around the downtown area, pointing... More

We meet Richard at 1:00 and started our adventure. He walked us through buildings inside and out all the while telling us about the history & architecture. Then we boarded the 'L' and headed to Wicker Park where we shared tacos and more exploring. Richard was great and we enjoyed our afternoon seeing things that no other tour would!

Chicago Greeter is an amazing gift from the city of Chicago. It is free and gives you the opportunity to tour many areas of Chicago. The tour guides are volunteer residents of Chicago who love their city. We recently chose to tour Wicker Park and Bucktown. The greeter met us at the Chicago Cultural Center and then he took us... Wow! Jim, our greeter, was AMAZING! Our guide was definitely selected to accommodate our interests. He was very warm, knowledgeable, and helpful! We saw gorgeous sites we NEVER would have found had we followed guidebooks! Loved the suggestions to see the Macy's flower show, view the visitor's center, peek into hotels! We connected to him instantly. I LOVE how we... More

Nancy was our Chicago Greeter and she shared her knowledge of Chicago, it's architecture, Millenium Park, local history, restaurants, recommended tours and transportation tips. Using a Chicago Greeter is the perfect way to be introduced to the city. Just plan ahead, they need 10 days to make the connection between greeter and visitor. A definite must for your first day... I was so happy to have stumbled across the Chicago Greeter tour opportunity! You can choose a neighborhood or specific interest (e.g., art, architecture, music, sports) and request a free tour at least 10 days in advance of your visit, for a max of 6 people. We selected Hyde Park and visited the Japanese Garden (on the site of the... More

I cannot say enough great things about the Chicago Greeter Program! I have visited Chicago many times for business, and the last few times have availed myself of the program. Each and every time it is unique, informative and personal! I have visited downtown tourist areas, off the beaten path parks and unique, ethic neighborhoods with generous thoughtful Chicagoans! That... More

Staying in Downtown / The Loop

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown / The Loop
Often visitors' first stop in Chicago, The Loop is a good starting point to sample the city's energy and flavor. This central business district boasts Michelin-rated restaurants, upscale hotels, premier shopping, and enough arresting architecture to keep your camera busy for hours. You won’t find too many photo galleries of downtown Chicago without a shot of Millennium Park and Cloud Gate (“The Bean”), one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. A stunning skyline coupled with cultural attractions like the Art Institute of Chicago present a Downtown where work and play peacefully coexist.
