This Italianate-style brick house, with original furnishings, looks very much as it did in 1865 when a group of townspeople presented it as a gift to Ulysses S. Grant on his victorious return from the Civil War.

I found going through Grant's home very educational. Listening to the tour guide painted a lovely story about the family. How Mrs Grant entertained people for dinner which included a 30 course meal. Back in the day that was a lot of work. The condition...More

This tour was very efficiently organized. Tours are continuous and a guide meets visitors at the front door. You are given information about Grant’s time in Galena and the house while you tour the downstairs and then set free to tour the upstairs on your...More

The Grant home was a very interesting stop. The cost is a $5.00 donation. We were the only two people on the tour so we had the guide all to ourselves. Almost all of the furnishings in the home are what was there when the...More

I know very little about Ulysses Grant so we thought we should make a tour or this home in Galena. The home is in itself very authentic and interesting but the senior tour guides were informative and delightful. It is quite small inside and we...More

We toured Grant’s home on a sunny Saturday. Beautiful views of Galena from its spot on the hill. Our tour guide, Chuck, was informative and engaging. Well worth the $5 suggested per person donation. Lots of interesting information about Grant and his wife Julia.

Your was very informative. I would consider this a must see if in Galena. Appropriate for children, inexpensive, great history, not too long, great views.

An amazing glimpse into US history. Our Guide said 90% of the home included original and restored pieces. Waited on the porch for 15 minutes but appreciated going through the house with a small group of only 8 people.

Take the house tour. It is about 40 minutes long and outlines Grant’s life and achievements. It is fascinating to imagine the Grant family occupying the various rooms Our guide was very knowledgeable. No charge although a $5 per person donation is recommended. Quite a...More

Donations...but may as well be a charge as you could get some stink eye for not throwing anything in the pot.
