Still recovering... but the charm potential is there

Trying to "shop small" this year, I drove out to Long Grove on a weekday afternoon searching for some unique gifts. It's been quite a while since I was last there. Many of the... read more

Long Grove could be, and should be, a great Chicagoland destination, but these days there isn't much there to justify a long trip to visit. Lots of empty buildings. Seems like rent is too high to keep most businesses there. But it can't be easy having a store in a location that's largely a weekend destination. I've always felt that... More

Trying to "shop small" this year, I drove out to Long Grove on a weekday afternoon searching for some unique gifts. It's been quite a while since I was last there. Many of the buildings are vacant or being renovated or are for sale. The Olive Tap was a nice surprise, with extensive olive oil tastings. Seasons and Irish Boutique... More

I've added one star since my last review. Long Grove has not been a full day's outing for a long time, but there have been enough improvements lately to provide a a pleasant afternoon. There are still a TON of empty stores. But there are also a couple of places to eat or get coffee; candy stores; a few galleries,... More

We visited downtown Long Grove after visiting the confectionary. About half is being renovated and worked on and the rest is pretty good. The stores were priced well and interesting.

Not as quaint as we remembered. Some of the cuter shops we used to visit are gone now. Seems like they are having trouble competing with nearby chains. Sad in a way.

My good friend and I traveled to Long Grove today from Oak Creek, WI. I hadn't been to Long Grove in over 12 years and my friend had not been for many years also. What a shock and disappointment. It is virtually a ghost town with most shops either for rent or for sale, falling apart and we only found... More

The town and shops look like they might be interesting so i'd like to go back when a Fest is not going on and they aren't packed with people. We decided to go to the Apple Fest because we were in search of apples and it sounded like something new to explore. I expected to be able to buy a... More

Recently visited Long Grove to take family photos there. The town is very cute, old brick sidewalks, little shops and an old covered bridge. However, I was there with family who had visited before and they were surprised with how many of the shops have closed and are just abandoned buildings. They have a big apple festival that draws seems... More

Boring! Not like Geneva, . They need some fun stores Nothing to bring me back! Sidewalks need repair Don't go if you have trouble walking. You have to pay $5 dollars a person for a fest! They would probably make more money if they didn't charge. It's Greed!

The great recession has taken its toll on this sleepy village and it has never recovered. At least a third of the shops remain vacant and the crowds are non existant, except for the ocassional festival. The new village board is attempting to revitalize and there are some encouraging signs of a pulse in town with a few new shops... More
