We intended to do some hiking here at Crab Orchard but the day didn't go as planned nor was the weather cooperative. Since we were in the area anyway we still went and just explored by car. Without trying too hard we were able to...More

If you like nature, you can find something here. Didn't have a whole lot of time as it was going to rain but got in a marked walk. Downloaded maps off the internet and picked out a few trails. Also drove around a bit and...More

Summer or Winter evenings are the best time to travel through the Refuge. Wildlife really starts to come out, birds are getting ready to nest for the night and the area is often less crowded.

This wildlife refuge is so beautiful. It is swampy and full of greenery. The water level is high with numerous lakes, birds, and wildlife. The crickets are buzzing at sunset as blue herons wade at the shallow waters edge. I didn't know Southern Illinois was...More

The website published a map with numbered viewing sites, complete with description of each site, including whether restrooms were available at each site. This clinched our decision to go to Crab Orchard rather than to other parks or open areas. On the day of eclipse...More

On a leash. Be aware that a deer may jump out and startle a dog. Lots of turkeys to see this time of year. Enjoyy your trip. .
