WoW! After reading about and studying this classic icon of architecture since I was a student (more than 30 years ago) I was finally able to walk the grounds and visit the Farnsworth House. I bet many others feel similarly upon visiting this important work of art. It's a must see if you're into architecture or modern design. Superb!

For all architecture fans, a place that should be on your bucket list! We had an excellent tour guide, and enjoyed everything about it ...the history, the location, the design. It was simply wonderful, and a great gift shop to boot!

Mies was misunderstood by many in his time. The existence of this structure today is living proof of his timeless genius. A great example of timelessness. The Marilyn Monroe of architecture.

Although beat to the punch by Phillip Johnson, who saw Mies' initial designs for a glass house, the Farnsworth House is the progenitor of the residential glass box. While the house is stripped to its simplest elements, Mies' handling of his basic materials, steel, glass, wood and travertine is almost Victorian in its sumptuousness and perfectness. The house literally floats... More

This is a tremendous site to visit. The house is great and the grounds are nice. The guided tour is great and the guides are very knowlegable. The site is a bit hard to find for someone out of state. If you find it the trip is worthwhile.

The Farnswhorth House was the very first house I drew in architecture school and I was really excited about visiting it when I went to Chicago. However, I considered not doing it since it's hard to get there from the city. I am so glad I finally decided to do it. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and he gave... More

We took the Chicago Architecture Foundation Sunday bus tour out to the house. It included a guide at the house and took about 4 hours and 30 minutes (travel time took up about 3 hours). The bus was comfortable and provided a glimpse of Illinois corn fields a little over a hour from the frenetic pace of Chicago. The house... More

There's not that much to see compared to other private homes built by famous architects that are now open to the public, but then again, this was a weekend retreat for one person and built by an architect who believed in "less is more." Still, the stories behind the house and the building itself are well worth the roughly 66-mile... More
