To say I was excited about visiting Farnsworth House is a bit of an understatement. I had studied Mies in architecture school in the late 70's. I've been lucky to have also visited the Barcelona Pavilion & had dinner in the 4 Seasons restaurant in...More

Don’t hesitate. A must see for architects or lovers of architecture. We hired a car from Chicago. An easy drive to get there. Very well preserved and maintained.

Finally visited the house after talking about it for years. What a lovely setting. It is as simple and as beautiful as I had expected. It would be lovely in the fall with all the colorful trees surrounding the house. But it would be kinda...More

The guided tour for this home was excellent. Seeing this version of a minimalist home and its layout was so interesting and impressive! Also makes you start to think...how much “stuff” do I really need? Tour guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Very much enjoyed...More

Having studied this modernist icon in architecture school decades ago, my wife and I had hoped to some day visit this purist exercise by Mies van der Rohe. It only took about 50 years to get here, but it was worth the wait. The tours...More

It was an excellent guided tour - very informative. How practical this house would be to live in was a question. Perhaps with no neighbors it would work. Still it was worth the trip.

Very unique architectural statement from Mies. The setting and the house are inseparable. Must see them as one. Worth the day trip from Chicago.

We had booked a tour online, and received an email about recent flooding that had cancelled some earlier tours. We were given an option to reschedule. We kept the reservation and were there for an 11:00 tour on a beautiful Saturday. That morning there was...More

I'd seen many photos of this house, but until you see it in its setting you haven't really seen it. The guided tour starts at the visitors center, which has a lovely gift shop. You view a video about the architect and the house. Then...More

In our tour group there were only 4-5 people. A friend of mine had a tour where he was the only one there! Good to get there early.

You can, but you may not be able to see it from the road. You might have a better look from the bridge nearby.

There is no public service "door to door" to the Farnsworth house. The Amtrak rails can get you from Chicago to downtown Plano which is about 4 miles or so away. It is fairly easy drive by car from Chicago to the Farnsworth... More
