Nicely Scenic Park

We are in the area for a couple days, and went to Starved Rock SP yesterday. Matthiessen is even a little more photogenic. Go early though as parking is limited.

What an amazing display of nature. The Dells here are beautiful. I would recommend going early because the crowds show up around 11:00. It might also be less crowded on a week day. Be sure to wear shoes that you can get wet. If you explore all the Dells you will probably step in some water.

Had never been to this state park and was told by family to make a stop on the way to Starved Rock State Park, so we did. This was a total surprise how nice the hiking trails were and the water falls from the bluffs. We went in the fall and the trees were nearly past peak but the weather... More

I took my kids aged 9 and 4 for a hike. The path was decent, similar to Starved Rock with lots of wooden stairs. My 4 year old whined but managed to walk to both upper and lower Dells. The stepping stones were fun for the kids but we did not make it all the way because one step was... More

Definitely worth a visit. Went with my family and spent the whole day there. We did stop by starved Rock but I feel Matthiessen state park is much better.

We had went to Starved Rock and saw signs for Mattiessen. I stopped at a visitors place before heading there and she told me to look for the long staircase (It was 145 stairs down!) and if I took that then it would be some great views of the water falls and it was. There are hiking trails and a... More

I love being surprised. When I saw the physical layout of this park, I thought we would be in and out in a jiffy after walking through some forests and bluffs. It was waaaay better than that! I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed the nature here. I was transported back in time just after walking down the long... More

The canyons were wide open and scenic without all the leaves for our first visit here. We hiked all of the available trails and enjoyed the many changes in elevation that gave us a good workout. The waterfall was marvelous and accessible without much mud or debris to deal with. Some say it is nicer than Starved Rock but I... More

When traveling to this area most people go to Starved Rock State Park - great place, but often crowded. A friend took me to Matthiessen State Park which is very close by, and it was beautiful, peaceful and quiet. The folks we met there were there for an uncrowded hike in a spot that rivaled the other park in scenery.... More

I spent allot of time here in summer when I was in school. The view from my grandmothers front porch was of the fort at Matthiessen across the Vermillion river. We would hike down the hill to the river and wade or swim across depending on how much rain their was that year. The cannons at Matthessen are visually more... More
