Burr Oak is going to be way out of the way for most travelers, but for Laura Ingalls Wilder lovers, it's an interesting stop. We have been to all the Ingalls sites. This is one of the smallest sites and the one time of her life Laura didn't write about. The Master's Hotel itself has been recreated to look like... More

A great surviving building from a little known chapter in the story of the Ingalls family. Several of the rooms have been restored to reflect the time period that Ingalls would have lived there. Some objects from both the hotels documented occupants as well as from Laura herself are on display. Tours are arranged through the visitor center located in... More

I missed the last tour, but it was fun to see the hotel and the person at the shop gave me a lot of information on the town and museum. The tour starts in a former bank building that was robbed in the 1930s.

We were on a road trip in Iowa and my husband surprised me by stopping in Burr Oak. As a lifetime major FAN of Laura, I was thrilled, to say the least. I loved it. Loved seeing the hotel, and walking in Laura's very footsteps!

This tiny out of the way Little House site doesn't get the love it deserves. Bonnie is an amazing tour guide, and there is some great history here that is missed in the LH books themselves. It is about 4 hours from Walnut Grove, and roughly a half hour or so down to Decorah (for food or hotels), but I... More

Masters hotel is really a tour of the Ingall's family home as they managed the kitchen of the hotel for travelers and particularly the stagecoach. Lots of interesting trivia/information about Laura Ingals Wilder and life during their stay there. The tour is conducted by docents who articulate and weave the story of the Ingall's family while working at the hotel.... More

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Burr Oak was the first Laura Ingalls homesite my 8-year-old daughter and I visited while on a LIW homesite tour last month. It obviously isn’t the biggest of the homesites, but the people there do a wonderful job with what they have. The Ingalls family lived in Burr Oak for about a year, but... More

The Masters Hotel is out in the middle of nowhere (though not quite as much as the Independence, KS LHotP site). I grew up in small town Iowa but Burr Oak brought a whole new meaning to the word. The address is a Decorah, IA extension/zip code so don't worry when your mapping service corrects it. My family of four,... More

Great tour about the part of Laura's childhood she didn't write about, but stayed tuned...her autobiography is being released in August of 2013. Also interesting opportunity to see what a typical "hotel" was like during prairie times. The nearby store/restaurant was not open when we were there.

My friend and I went on a the tour of the Masters Hotel, which gives you an idea of what it was like when Laura Ingalls Wilder lived there with her family. The tour guide was so funny, and at the end of the tour, he had us all dress up in pioneer clothing and take photos. It wasn't a... More
