Jun 2019 • Friends
Dhankar_the unforgettable terrain, located at 12776 ft from sea level at Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. A beautiful village with ancient Buddhist gumpha and monastery and a lake. Number of houses are 68 here. We l, group of friends stayed at Dhankar heights, a very well maintained hotel with all amenities and with a marvellous view.

As an any other Gompa the place has serenity to it. From the top the view is nice. I speacially liked the drive up to the Gompa when you can see the confluence of Pin and Spiti river. Good photo opportunity too.

Good views
Oct 2019
From the stories of lamas throwing stones at invaders to corridors cut into into rock face, it is not hard to believe that it was the old capital of Spiti. The monastery has a statue of Dhayan buddha and Buddhist scriptures in Bhoti language.

Endangered Heritage
Jun 2019
It is situated about 25 kms. east of Kaza and serves eastern part of central Spiti. Dhankar is a big village and erstwhile capital of Spiti King during 17th century. On top of a hill there is a fort which use to be a prison in olden times. Listed as one of the most endangered sites in the world, as it is vulnerable to sound and wind erosion, but uncared till date. No visible efforts to preserve this great Indian heritage. The Monastery has about 100 Lamas. Buddhist scriptures in Bhoti language are found here. Principal figure is a Statue of "Vairochana" (Dhayan Budha) consisting of 4 complete figures seated back to back. It has relics in the shape of paintings and sculptures.

Small Gompa in a strategic position
Jun 2019
Built like a castle on the high walls of Dhankar, this monastery offers you a mighty view of the Spiti valley. Historically relevant, and naturally awesome, the trek for the Dhankar Lake starts near this monastery. We would surely like to spend a night near this place the next time we visit

Incredible rock formations makes this a very unique gompa
Oct 2018
The location of most gompas is meticulously planned - there is no coincidence in where they a founded, but that is something of the inner world. Yet this often coincides with outer beauty, which is the case with this place. The features of the mountain is stunning and the buildings seems to defy gravity as they cling on the sheer cliffs.

The views here are magnificent!

At around 3900 meter elevation I can only imagine how tough it is here during the winter months.

A distinct monastery
Apr 2019
- From a distance, precarious and precipitous standing of Dhankar Gompa looks so fragile as if it will virtually fall on you.Dhankar Gompa (Monastery) is a wonderful tourist destination locked between the rocky spurs at the top of cliff in the Dhankar village..Dhankar Gompa is a village and also a Gompa, a Buddhist temple in the district of Lahaul and Spiti in India. It is situated at an elevation of 3,894 metres in the Spiti Valley above Dhankar Village, between the towns of Kaza and TabThe Dhankar Gompa more than 1000 years of ages and also is connected to the remainder of the valley with a Motorable road,

The old capital of Spiti
May 2018
Dhankar was the traditional capital of the Spiti Valley Kingdom during the 17th century and has some features dating back to the 12th century. It was the seat of the early rulers of Spiti, the Nonos, who had the right to cultivate the government lands. This Gompa is situated between Kaja and Tabo. While visiting this place we can understand the old culture of the area and have the insight of Tibetan buddhist culture.
