The Danish Windmill is a museum for all people interested in Denmark, Danish customs, Scandinavian traditions and, of course, windmills. Elk Horn’s Danish windmill is America’s only authentic working Danish windmill. The mill, originally built in Nørre Snede, Denmark in 1848 was brought to the United States in November, 1975 and rebuilt in Elk Horn, Iowa by community volunteers in 1976, America’s Bicentennial year.

Small museum but mostly a gift shop. The city is currently raising funds to fix the windmill (blades are missing) but it's still a great story.

We had driven by the windmill before we went to the Danish Museum. It was all torn apart and we figured there was no reason to stop. We found out from the woman at the museum that they were going to bring some people in...More

Well we went just for a stop. They have a great gift shop and selection of items. It's rather large in there and they have pretty much anything you might be looking for that's Dutch!

Windmill was broken. Waiting to replace the blades. The museum was closed. This was the second time we tried to visit the windmill and it was under repair both times.

Good compliment to the Danish Museum. Interesting how it was taken apart in Europe and sent to Elk Horn. Only about the bottom 1/3 is available to tour. The upper regions are blocked off.

We enjoyed a Sunday afternoon drive, from Omaha, to take in the Trivoli festival. Celebration of Danish heritage. We had fun watching the Scandinavian dancers and toured the Windmill Museum. It was originally used to grind grain in Denmark. It is the ONLY authentic Danish...More

Always stop when we are in town for that one little gift or wine or party supplies for Danish theme. Friendly, helpful service. Lots of variety of items. Decent prices. Have never taken the mill tour, but will someday.

I wasn't aware of this Danish community in Elk Horn, Iowa until seeing it advertised on a road sign. The windmill was purchased in Denmark and transported to Elk Horn for their community. Interesting history and a neat point of interest on I-80, if you...More
