The Danish Windmill is a museum for all people interested in Denmark,...

The Danish Windmill is a museum for all people interested in Denmark, Danish customs, Scandinavian traditions and, of course, windmills. Elk Horn’s Danish windmill is America’s only authentic working Danish windmill. The mill, originally built in Nørre Snede, Denmark in 1848 was brought to the United States in November, 1975 and rebuilt in Elk Horn, Iowa by community volunteers in 1976, America’s Bicentennial year.

Always stop when we are in town for that one little gift or wine or party supplies for Danish theme. Friendly, helpful service. Lots of variety of items. Decent prices. Have never taken the mill tour, but will someday.

I wasn't aware of this Danish community in Elk Horn, Iowa until seeing it advertised on a road sign. The windmill was purchased in Denmark and transported to Elk Horn for their community. Interesting history and a neat point of interest on I-80, if you happen to be going that direction. There is a gift shop and plenty of info... More

Great stop tight off highway 80. I have always wanted to stop here and glad we made the time. We watched a short film on the history of the windmill and then was lead on a tour up into the windmill by a very knowledgeable guide. My three grandchildren were very interested in all the information supplied by the film... More

Great place for picture stop and shopping inside windmill. Staff person was very friendly and willing to explain and assist. Shop is loaded with Danish items of all prices. Well worth the stop in this quaint Danish town.

Rather disappointed. Just a wind mill that is not working. Quite a drive from interstate that ended up being a waste of gas and time. Sorry folks.

The windmill wasn't spinning, but it was still interesting to see together with reading placards on Viking history. There were lots of visitor brochures for other Iowa attractions and clean bathrooms.

This windmill was purchased in Denmark and then shipped to this quaint Danish community. The volunteers and support of the community rebuilt it and it's amazing to see and hear its history. The people here are so nice and friendly. We stayed at the Danish Village RV park behind the Gas station and store. Loved the people, food and the... More

We happened upon this windmill by accident, and unfortunately it hadn't yet opened for the day. But even just from the outside, we were able to not only enjoy the windmill itself but read the educational signs to read about how it works and how it ended up in Elk Horn. We didn't stay long, but it was a nice... More

Just off I-80, about 5 mins. Lots of signs letting you know where to go. Also visitor center, lots of brochures on othere thing to do across the state. Welcomed as soon as you get in. Took the tour which is about 30 mins. Lots of items in the gift shop to buy. Windmill was down for repairs but still... More

Smallish museum but nicely done. A bit off the highway, about 9 miles, but beautiful country and a nice drive. My older kids enjoyed it. Lego play area for younger kids.
