Worth a walk through for the history and great architectural details. Lots of shops and dining nearby.

This place is always swarmed with college kids because its steps and walls are great for chilling with a laptop in nice weather. The building is beautiful but the inside is bland. If you want a beautiful historical building, go next door to the museum of natural history.

The wood work and furniture is amazing. A view into the past as Iowa just started. Took a guest there and they found it interesting. It is about a 1 hour museum depending on how long you look at things. It is right downtown so it is a great filler for some time.

Exceptionally well maintained interior brings you back to the years after the US civil war, when state assemblymen gathered for several days each year to argue over the future of a territory and young state. There are two levels underneath the gold-plated dome. This is a part of the U of Iowa's original campus called the Pentacrest. Occasionally there are... More

Old Cap's cornerstone was laid on Independence Day (July 4th) in 1840. It served as Iowa's Territorial Capital until 1846 when Iowa became the 29th State in the Union. It served as state capital until 1857 when Des Moines assumed that role. Old Cap has been beautifully preserved, and driving west on Iowa Avenue up to Old Cap is a... More

Visit a marvelously maintained and refurbished 1800 building that became part of Iowa's history. Beautiful woodwork, history and exhibits will keep you entertained.

Beautiful architecture, rich history, kind staff. We made a point to tour the Old Capital in between doctor appointments, but when we got there the front and back doors were locked; we were disappointed. We walked around to the side to take more pictures and saw a different entrance. As I was reading the sign that said they were closed... More

The Old Capitol was lovingly restored in the 1970s to its origins as the Iowa Statehouse. Visitors can see the reverse spiral staircase, view the Senate Chambers and the House, as well as offices and some displays. The building was deeded to the (State) University of Iowa when the legislature removed the capitol to Des Moines in 1856. The building... More

My first visit here was when I was a kid as part of a school excursion. It was the first time that I had ever been in such a building, so for me it was a big deal. Like a lot of these places, they're good making what otherwise might appear as something borderline dull, as very interesting, unique and... More
