I visited Iowa City in December, and being a geology geek, I stopped this spot just before I had to head back home. The visitor center was interesting and the staff was very helpful. They provided a pamphlet with info that corresponds to small numbered...More

Took 7 yo grandson there to look at fossils. We went into the visitors center & watched a cool movie of the history of the gorge. VERY friendly staff in the center that gave grandson some neat gifts. He was delighted.

This was super neat to check out. It's an old riverbed type of thing that got washed away in several floods, revealing tons of fossils. They're mostly plant fossils, corals, but some shells and other small creatures. We came here with small children and they...More

Formed by two massive floods in 1993 and 2005, the Corps of Engineers has made this 'damaged' former campground into an impressively interpreted fossil bed where you can very easily see the remnants of sea animals from 375-million years ago. Its a great idea to...More

This is an amazing place. But, if you don't spend time studying a bit before you come, you won't understand what you're seeing.

Fun free activity if you enjoy searching for fossils. It's open until 10 but there are no lights so better to go during the day. This can be a quick stop not too far from the highway if you are in the area.

Good call in information for the gorge via cell phone. Very intersting information in initial visuals in the way into the gorge. Caution - on an Iowa summer day - consider gooing in the morning, the rocks do seem to store and radiate heat.
