I did not expect to find an art museum of such outstanding quality in a town of only 26,000 in north Iowa. But the Tudor-style mansion contains a wonderful variety of paintings and woodcut prints from a plethora of gret artists. This place is a treat!

We were in town weekend of October 8th seeing FLW architecture and would have loved to see this museum. Before we came we researched but it must have been before they had up their closing announcement. There was local Octoberfest and tons of tourist in town. They had a fundraiser the night before and then just close the whole next... More

We are sorry we missed you on October 8. Our annual fall fundraiser is a huge event for us and it takes several days to clean up and take down all the extra tables. We hope you are able to visit us on your next visit to Mason City! More

Visited Thursday evening, when the museum is open until 8 pm. We were the only visitors, and it was such a treat to be able to wander around in the silence. Captivated by the Bil Baird: World of Puppets exhibit, especially a wonderful owl and Winnie the Pooh characters. The art is a pleasing wide-ranging collection, including classic portraits, modernism... More

We are so glad you decided to stop by on a Thursday evening! Our Tuesday and Thursday evening hours do usually have less visitors and can also offer a very peaceful experience between you and the artwork. Thank you for your visit and kind review! More

Two friends and I stopped at the museum for a too-short visit. We were captivated, of course, by the Bill Baird puppets and the fun video with some of their shows and interviews with Bill and his wife. Overall, the museum's collection is amazing and it is housed in a gorgeous building with a wonderful woodsy setting. I will definitely... More

The building is full of attractive gallery spaces containing a surprising variety of artistic forms, including those done by nationally known artists. For the young at heart is a wonderful collection of puppets, including a 30-minute or so video on the man who made them and parts of the shows he did. A real gem in a city that one... More

Wonderful little museum. They ask for a donation. The marionettes that were on displayed in this museum are quite impressive. They have the ones that the children from the Sound of Music used.

No admission fee, but please make a donation. Grand old mansion. Great permanent collection and well-curated special exhibitions the day I visited. If you want to see the marionettes from the movie, Sound of Music, stop here. Nice gift shop. At this art museum, purchase the booklet to guide you on the architectural walk in that neighborhood. In a short... More

How could you NOT want to see the Bil Baird marionettes from the Sound of Music? Other exhibits were good as well - wish there'd been a little more label info. Free admission, but definitely worth your donation.

Art is enjoyable and puppet display quite interesting. Otherwise tour Music Man and Stockman House first and see this only if you have extra time.
