Travel 650 feet underground into an active salt mine! Experience a cool and soothing subterranean world formed by salt deposits in the Permian Sea long ago. See the raw mine as it was left more than 50 years ago on the Salt Mine Express train ride and catch a guided tour on a tram to the Dark Ride. You won't want to miss a special gallery filled with authentic movie costumes and memorabilia.

NEW in June is the SAFARI SHUTTLE! Add a one hour guided tour to your underground adventure and go BEYOND STRATACA. See salt formations not available to the general public until now! Limited capacity -- only 12 visitors at a time depart 3-4 times a day.

Tip one, buy the safari pass and skip the dark ride. Dark ride more or less the same but safari is much longer and way more interesting. Otherwise we had a great time. If you or the kids are science minded it's outstanding. If not, like me, still very interesting. Maybe not as much Hollywood stuff as you think, but... More

I'm glad we decided to stop here. It is a unique place. You take the lift down 650 feet into the former mine. The immense size is astonishing. In addition to all the displays and brief videos explaining the salt mining process, there is a 15 minute train ride and half hour tram to take you to additional parts of... More

I heard good things about this tour. It was even better. The guides were extremely helpful and went way beyond to make sure all questions were answered. You can tell the people enjoyed working there. The salt caverns are immense. There are 3 tours so make sure you know what is available. Be sure to bring a light jacket as... More

This is definitely a go to place for everyone. I did all the tours and I highly recommend the underground tours of the Strataca salt mine. Staff is very friendly and informed. Tours are all either by train in the dark or by tram with your own flashlight (which they provide). Very little walking required. Everything has been left as... More

Who knew such a place was still around, matter of less in Hutchinson, KS. Plan on spending a few hours and take all the rides you can. Between the history of the salt minds and the Hollywood archives, you won't want to leave.

Glad we did it. Never been in a hole 650 feet down surrounded by salt. You ride a train around in the dark and learn a bit about salt mining and geology. Comfortable temperature year round at 68 degrees. Not as beautiful as a limestone cave, but truly unique.

The salt mine was very amazing. It is a must visit. There is a lot of information of how the salt was formed in this area, what the different parts are used for,and how it is mined.

A unique experience. Displays were informative and interesting. Staff was enthusiastic, welcoming, and helpful. We also did the "Dark Tour," which was great. We didn't have any long waits. Highly recommended.

I didn't know what to expect. What I found was one of the most different and interesting museums I've ever been to. It's hard to describe what it's like 600 feet underneath Kansas. Suffice that it's a unique and educational experience. They have an additional tour for about $12. It's well worth it. You WILL leave with a piece of... More
