A true gem of the Central KY region--and the PERFECT creek to beginner paddlers. Put in at the forks for an awesome day on the water. You will have to portage near the low-head damn near the beginning of the paddle--but it's marked every where and very easy to do. Nice Class II whitewater. And for poetry and/or history buffs,... Known for its smallmouth bass fishing and route through the heart of the Bluegrass horse country, both North and South Elkhorn are a delight to canoeists and kayakers.

The Elkhorn is a hidden gem. It's great for fishing, and lovely to go wading. Finding public access can be difficult but is defiantly worth the wait. If your going fishing then you can expect Small Mouth bass, Rock Bass, Brim, Channel Cat, and Crawfish.

Awesome way to spend the day. Wading the creek for some small mouth enjoying the scenery. There are several public access points to park and walk in. Soft crawls seem to work the best.

If you are looking for a place to camp in Frankfort, look no further. This is a very well run, clean and well spaced campground. The staff is friendly and very helpful. This is a tame stream in low water conditions that can be quite different after a rain. There are easy stretches and every now and then a small rapid to go through. I fell out of my canoe twice in the rapids but since its summer with the warm water, no worries. This is also a nice stream to fish... More

Arrived for a family event in Lexington and was looking for something to do with our two teenage boys. We decided to kayak down Elkhorn Creek and had a great time doing it. Creek is a bit of a misnomer. I didn't realize that the designation "River" is based on distance and Elkhorn Creek is one mile short (99 miles)... More

This creek is pretty all along it's course. Perfect for canoing. There is calm water or rapids, depending on what you like. It is an easy distance to go for a fun day on the water.
