Horse Racing's Living History Museum!

At Old Friends, the non-profit Thoroughbred Retirement Center in Georgetown, KY, the horses may not be racing anymore, but they are winners everyday. Founded in 2003 by former Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen, Old Friends cares for more than 135 horses across three states, many of them stallions whose racing and breeding careers came to an end. A "Rural Hall of Fame", the farm welcomes visitors to get up close and personal with such stars of the turf as Breeders' Cup Champion Gulch, Belmont Stakes winner Sarava, millionaire gelding Arson Squad, and many more.

Hear their stories, meet them in person...Er..Horse. Our guests come to visit a few ex-racehorses, they leave having been touched by the heart of a Thoroughbred hero. Tours are daily at 10:00, 1:00 & 3:00 with a reservation.

Horse lover or not, this is such a great place to check out! For only $10 a person, you can see some of horse history's greatest horses! Not to mention you get to see Popcorn Deelites, the horse that played Seabiscuit! Its a wonderful program with wonderful horses. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area!

My 13 year old daughter and I looked for something interesting to do while in town. One tour wasn't available with another company, so they recommended Old Friends. I wouldn't have know about it if not for them. Thanks Thoroughbred Heritage! We arrived and waited inside where they had lovely barn cats to greet you. They are super sweet! It... More

My wife and I drove 900 miles to see her most favorite horse ever (Silver Charm). I wasn't expecting much but the setup and tour were over the top.

My family visited me for my birthday and I wanted to give the a piece of my Kentucky experience. Old Friends more than fit the bill. There is a "Field of Dreams" quality to the place. If you are looking for something different to do and are a hard core horse racing fan or have never seen a race on... More

Wow! What a great experience! Our guide, Ellen, is a truly committed volunteer. She gave us so much information and you tell how much she loves the horses the mission of Old Friends. It was great seeing these beautiful animals up close and being able to give them treats. I left wishing I lived in the area so I could... More

Here you will see Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont winners. They also have a movie star. You get to get up close and personal with the famous and not so famous racing stars. Where else can you take a selfie with Silver Charm? The volunteers are super knowledgeable about all of the horses. You may even catch a glimpse of... More

I am so glad I came here! As part of planning a short trip to the Lexington area to meet American Pharaoh, I signed up for a tour and it was a highlight of my entire trip. The horses are beautiful and friendly, and I recognized so many of them from their racing days - it's an amazing collection of... More

Old Friends does a great job in rescuing retired champions and is worthy of supporting. They have a tour that is very informative for those who are interested in thoroughbred history. We thought we might be ble to "pet" or feed a few of the horses, but in general, these racehorses are bred to be aggressive and many of them... More

A few commercial Lexington guide services might visit Old Friends, but you really don't need them. It's easy to find on your own, and the one-hour-plus tour costs only $10 per person. You'll do some gentle walking as you visit the 'senior' horses, but the farm can accommodate those who need golf-cart transportation. Our guide provided wonderful background stories on... More
