My dog almost died here. She slid off a rock and down into the canyon. She came VERY close to dying that day. So HIGHLY recommend keeping even young, agile dogs on a leash for safety. Otherwise gorgeous hike! Moderately challenging.

My boyfriend and I decided to take up Gulf Hagas while on vacation in Millinocket and I am so glad we did. After reading many reviews we decided to take our dog with us (2 year old mutt mix) and she did fine. She loves climbing and scaling rocks so we had no trouble with the steep sections because she... This is a favorite hike when a challenge is in order but doing Mount Katahdin isn't possible. Rocky, wooded path with plenty of ledges overlooking stream. In warmer weather, we would have taken off our shoes and waded to cool down, but the day was autumnal, and we enjoyed the changing leaves instead. NOT for small children, NOT handicapped friendly.

We are experienced hikers but I started out with a sore knee and this hike didn't help. My fault. Walking sticks really help in many spots. We did the whole loop, took about 5-6 hrs with stops along the way. Made a mistake in taking our Lab along, thinking the trail would be milder and she would enjoy the chance... More

We decided to do Gulf Hagas before we left Maine for the day. We absolutely underestimated the difficulty of the hike after a weekend of outdoor activities. However, it was BEAUTIFUL!

What a beautiful place. We arrived just before lunch, no one was there. You pay a fee at the gate, the man there was very very nice and helpful. We drove by the campsites (they seem to have amazing views, are very private, no flush toilets, not sure about running water) We parked at the first parking lot. The trail... More

Very strenuous hike, I'm 54, hubby's 63. We managed without difficulty, but wasn't really prepared for how strenuous it really was! Disappointed that you really couldn't see the water/gorge very well, even from the "viewpoints" - which were extremely strenuous to even get to! It took us 8 hours to complete!

Struggled with the star rating. This trail is really above average (4 or 5 stars) for the young, fit person used to the strenuous trails in New England. For the middle aged, overweight flatlanders it was an asskicker. This trail broke me. Let me say that we are experienced day hikers. Just not used to the strenuous nature of this... More

This is a wonderful day hike....it is about 10 miles roundtrip from the parking area on the KI road. There is a fee to enter the road from either end (recommend a DeLorme to find it), but it is well-worth it!! You have to wade across the West Branch of the Pleasant River, which is 0.2 mile from the parking... More

3 falls on 6 mile loop. Technical hike with narrow paths. I would not recommend for young children. It takes 1 hour to get from Greenville to trail head close to Stair Falls
