Points of interest near and far visible from Fort Preble. The fort is not much itself, just walls where cannons could aim out at passing boats. Unfortunately no trace of the actual weaponry left. Portland Breakwater Light is visible to the north, Spring Point Light...More

We had taken a harbor cruise and made a stop at Fort Preble where the guide gave us some interesting facts about the fort and its history. We thought it was interesting and plan to come back to explore it further.

While on our adventure up the east coast, we wanted to see lighthouses but we ended up seeing just as many forts. This was yet another fort that wasn't part of our "plans" but ended up being something we enjoyed. It's very scenic here. There...More

I've visited this site numerous times, over the past 5 years, the latest being in May of 2016. It is adjacent to the Portland Head Lighthouse. For the history buff, it's a great freewalk at your own leisure to see the remnants of that fort....More

This site is a little small, yet the history behind it is very interesting! The site is very accessible by wheelchairs, except for the lighthouse... very rough walk along the jetty.

This is a beautiful setting on an old military installation and current community college. It can be explored as part of a visit to Bug Light Park, Willard Beach and the Greenbelt Walking path.

It is a pretty small site but still worth visiting. Wonderful views of the ocean and nearby casco bay islands. Parking can be tight but you can use public transportation and be dropped off very nearby.

Talk to the lady at the gift stand. She was the best part of the place. We were too timid to try the breakwater walk on those huge pieces of rock with gaps to step over. First rock you step on rocks. Beware! Ask the...More

I went to view the parade of the tall ships coming into the Portland Harbor this week and wasn't disappointed. Not only can you walk around the area of the Fort, you can see the Spring Point Lighthouse, bike, visit the campus of Southern Maine...More

A central feature of the Spring Point Shoreway, the remains of Fort Preble form an architecturally interesting backdrop for a leisurely stroll along Casco Bay with stunning views of Maine's famed islands and Spring Point Light, one of few lighthouses regularly open to the public.
