It's worth seeking this place out, either if you're looking for some quick and really good tasting ice cream or if you're interested in seeing a working farm. It is quite legitimate. These guys aren't spending their money on beautification... they're spending on quality product. They sell some dedicated dairy products as well (the cheese tasted extremely fresh) if you're... The creamery not only sells great ice cream, but also milk and other dairy products. The prices are reasonable and a great treat on a hot summer's day after a motorcycle ride.

A massive, full scale operation, South Mtn. Creamery has has hundreds of cows, an amazing store that has a selection of meats, milk (some of which is fresh enough to have just come straight from the cow), and possibly the best and freshest ice cream you've ever had. The ice cream here is a religious experience, and by itself warrants... More

You are in the middle of Maryland dairy country, so don't get upset by cows and things associated with them. The creamery store offers a number of down home food products ranging from local honey, fruits and vegetables (in season), sausages, and cheeses, to the dairy products - and that is the primary reason for the visit. We found the... More

Just went on the tour this afternoon. It was wonderful. The kids had so much fun. Best part was visiting the calf barn. Very informational and all the children's questions were answered. They learned a lot. Best part was the scoop of ice cream after the tour. It was delicious. Nothing like homemade ice cream! Disappointed we couldn't stay and... More

I have a "problem" with ice cream...OK - I don't really think it's a problem, but whenever we travel, local ice cream shops are researched before hand so they can sneak into the vacation itinerary. We were in the area for a visit to Antietam and to ride the C&O, so on a day visiting Gathland State Park (and hiking... More

As others have noted, the smell and the flies here are overwhelming. At least the ice cream is tasty!

My grandson and I went to the South Mountain Creamery Spring Festival last year. We especially enjoyed the hay ride around the dairy farm, the tour of their milk plant, the milking of the cows, visiting with the baby calves, rabbits and chicken, and the free samples of their delicious milk products. We are going again this year. Their Spring... More

I'm not sure which I love more. The ice cream is amazing. Get the butter pecan! And the calves are so friendly I in love!
