A "must see" to first time Detroit visitors!

A great introduction to the history of Detroit! It's free to visit, and the exhibits are historically correct and wonderfully displayed.

First, this museum is free to enter. It is not in the same league as the DIA or the Henry Ford but it gives a great introduction to Detroit and a little bit of everything about the city. We learnt a lot about the history of Detroit and some of the exhibits were excellent. We loved the old streets on... More

Because the trains are his favourite part ... but Nana was quite impressed with the whole place. Well-done little museum gives you a nice taste of Detroit's history and piques your curiosity for more.

Nice variety of displays, mostly static but still worth a stop. The building doesn't look very big from the outside, but there's more there than you would think. We go there as soon as it opened and were able to see much of it without anyone else around. It is fully accessible, the elevator is large enough for a chair... More

This is an awesome place to learn about Detroit's history, so many exhibits that display everything from music to automotive. The information ranges from 1800's to more recent happenings. It's an great way to spend a few hours and its free so you can always come back. It is not be the best place for kids younger than 7/8 years... More

Took my parents who were visiting from Canada and my 4 children to the Detroit Historical Museum. The kids found it really fun. The staff was super friendly and helpful. My parents probably enjoyed it the most. My dad could have spent the whole day there.

Not sure if it's always going to be free, but I'd gladly pay to see it, although I've been through it probably 5 times and I've lived in Detroit all my life. Just fun to see Detroit-centric history and "artifacts." Plus the money and donated items that Bob Richie (aka Kid Rock) has given to the museum really amp up... More

An enjoyable museum for spending a few hours. This isn't a "warts and all" portrait of Detroit, and there's little emphasis on the city's dramatic decline of the 1960s-1990s (nor its recent upswing). But what you do get is a thorough introduction to the city's origins as a French settlement, its importance as a trading post, and its remarkable industrial... More

This is a fine museum chronicling the history of Detroit. We were very impressed. As an added bonus, there was no admission charge. This should be in the plans of most visitors-it is that good.

Very proud of my city's museum! The old streets of Detroit alone is worth the trip. A great mix of history, autos and fun! Free of charge but after visiting you'll want to leave a donation.
