The little town of Hillman, just over the Montmorency County line from Alpena is experiencing a metamorphosis. Like so many towns in our part of the state, is has slowly withered & wilted away. Then folks around there began to take notice and decided they were not going to lie down and play dead. The Thunder Bay River, not nearly as famous as its cousin the Au Sable down the road a piece meanders quietly through this pretty little town. & just between dams, there is a grist mill complete with a big water wheel that lazily goes round and round. I've traveled the twenty some miles there from Alpena on numerous occasions. It is the home of many different happenings. My favorite was a hat show put on by another collector. I was in my element, admiring her collection. There have been shows, festivals, antiques, quilts, looms, story tellers & singers of song. And FOOD. You come to hear stories & songs & pause to munch down some good food & then resume the show. The antiques show is really fun, come & buy or if you have antiques, come & set up your things & sell! If you wander down the main street & its warm weather, there is a WOWSER ice cream shop on a corner. Go get a generous sunday & wander back toward the mill & just sit & enjoy the view. HIllman had this really neat old double camel back bridge from the depression era. But alas it was simply too old and unstable so it had to be replaced. But wait until you see what they have now!! The graceful curves of a double camel back traverse the river and at Christmas time it is BEAUTIFUL! You are entering the town from M-32 & coming down the hill. There at the foot of the hill is this bridge all ablaze with tiny lights, and off to your left you see the outline of the grist mill & the decorated trees and it's like a Disney movie scene. We on the Sunrise side of Michigan have secrets... Hillman's one of them! Just another bit of Pure Michigan! & I DON'T even work for the chamber of commerce! Just love the beauty of this part of our mitten.

The ladies of our group number up to 6+during summer and 4 during winter months. We meet every Saturday we can , to sit and knit, crochet, weave , tat ...whatever. We have no demands or requirements. We just have a good time...than we go for lunch, pie and/or ice cream. You should join us.
The Mill is a great meeting place , center of town and all but sometimes we can't sit that particular Sat. Because of a birthday party or shower of some type happening , but that doesn't stop us from having lunch or PIE.

There's not a great deal to experience at Brush Creek Mill but it contains much history of the area and of the Veterans of the area. Also, "Hillman" was originally called "Brush Creek".

Nice little historical mill with local artisans and crafters, also small rental area for baby showers, etc. Pictures and artifacts from the area. Nice views, worth a stop in.

Experience the way they use to grind wheat, corn and farm grains of every type. History abounds in the building of this local icon. Refurbished and in working condition it takes you back in time to a simpler way of life. The great products like Brush Creek coffee will make you come back time and time again!
