Overview

Established in 1891, Itasca is Minnesota's oldest state park. Today, the park totals more than 32,000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. Walk across the mighty Mississippi as it starts its winding journey 2,552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico. Stand under towering pines at Preacher's Grove. Visit the Itasca Indian Cemetery or Wegmann's Cabin, landmarks of centuries gone by. Camp under the stars, or stay the night at the historic Douglas Lodge or cabins. Explore Wilderness Drive past the 2,000-acre Wilderness Sanctuary, one of Minnesota's seven National Natural Landmarks.

Nice swimming beach with changing room, showers. No lifeguard, which we prefer, but that may be a concern for some visitors. Wonderful scenic drives through forests and around lakes....hiking paths.....historical stops along the way, such as the ancient native burial mounds, and of course the...More

Not actual headwaters of the Mississippi River. There are 5 other water sources upstream from where the “river” begins. It was beautiful and worth walking across the small river that comes out of Lake Itasca. The campground is not entirely big rig friendly. There is...More

We have now traveled the entire length of the Mississippi River. Although a bit "touristy" it was incredible to see the Headwaters of the Mississippi. Well worth the drive and spectacular views. Take the drive around the park - it was pretty cool as well.

Fun day spent enjoying the great outdoors. Visit the headwaters of the Mississippi, get an ice cream cone and climb a fire tower for a spectacular view!

I wish I had had more time to explore this wonderful park, but I had waited way too long to see the Headwaters of the Mississippi. I drove the loop and stopped at the oldest pine tree. Maybe I will come back one day, but...More

To many mosquitoes, deer flys for me! I like the outdoors but it was over kill on hikes. Wear more than needed bug spray and reapply often. I wish I could have enjoyed the hike more but with your hood drawn tight and layers of...More

We have been coming here annually for over 35 years. It is a great place to hike, camp and see some cool sites including the Headwaters of the Mississippi, Indian Mounds, Pioneer Cemetery, Log Cabin, Fire Tower, and a cool gift shop.
