Savor the smells and sights of an 1870s general store as you sample the wares or try a game of checkers. When the railroad bypassed the small town of West Newton, the Harkin Store was forced to close with much of the unsold inventory still on the shelves, where it remains today.

With a story to tell from yesteryear when steamships ran the MN River to bring supplies to the settlers. Original decor in the store, which makes one feel as though stepping back in time to the 19th Century. Interesting is an adjective which doesn't do...More

Not every day we can step in an original store in its original location. The guide explained everything. Worth the small admission which I'm sure helps with maintenance and upkeep.

Our destination was the Harkin Store and I'm glad we stopped. It was a quick visit and you can plan to spend about a half hour there. Although there isn't that much to see it was a good learning experience about the Harkin family and...More

This museum, which has a narrated presentation and opportunity for questions, brings alive the 1880's experience. The store has preserved much of the ambiance of the original, including the actual items that were sold. There is also a gift shop.

For only $6 per person, I received a history lesson on family who owned the store, the 1870 town that once stood there, it's demise, and a grand look around inside where almost half the items displayed there are the original item. Attached gift shop,...More

There's a lot to see in a small space. Interesting story but most of the items claimed to be original are replicas. Plan for about 15 minutes.

Interesting store back at the turn of the century late 1800's with a lot of original merchandise from the time period. Small but worth stopping in.,

One of our favorite stops in New Ulm. Very fascinating history and museum. Great little gift shop and beautiful countryside and drive.

Being part of the MN History Museum, they charge $6/person to go into a one room "store." Even though we made the drive out, it wasn't worth the extra expense so we left.
