In the aftermath of the Civil War, Washington Country turned its attention...

In the aftermath of the Civil War, Washington Country turned its attention to rebuilding and westward expansion. Lumber prospects in the St. Croix Valley promised wealth and success for Washington County. In 1867, ground was broken for a new courthouse high on the bluff overlooking the bustling commerce of downtown Stillwater and the St. Croix River.

The building was completed in 1870 and served as the administrative and judicial center of the county for more than a century. In 1971, the Historic Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the oldest standing courthouse in Minnesota. In 1975, official business moved to the new government center and a new vision for this architectural gem was developed which included history-related exhibits and activities.

Today, guided public tours are offered Monday through Saturday and include the historic courtroom, exhibit rooms and old 1900 county jail. Private tours, school groups, meetings and event space are also available.

Driving uphill to this gorgeous brick building, then finding out there were FREE tours, was fun for us! Our guide was knowledgeable about the year round events that go on here. The video on early Stillwater was informative. We were so glad that a large community effort saved this building from demolition.

Good for history buffs and others. A nice stop without all the overkill of many historical places. Can wander on your own, see an old jail, look at the exhibits at your own pace and look out at the beautiful view standing at the entrance overlooking beautiful Stillwater.

If you love history, check this place out. I enjoyed learning the history about this court house and happy you see that the town kept this building. We had a great tour guide! My boys even enjoyed it and they are 11 and 15 years old.

We saw the courthouse while visiting the war memorial across the street and decided to stop in and walk around. A docent greeted us and offered to show us around since no one else had shown up for the 10am tour. We also watched a short video on the history of the area and the courthouse that was really well... Lots of history here! Learn of the jail and the outlaws who spent time here. Interesting construction issues. Also view the war memorial across the street.

What a great place for Wedding Reception, Banquet, or other event requiring a ficilitie to feed large groups. They also have the old jail which housed some of history's most famous criminals such as the James gang, and the Young brothers.
