This really feels like a vanity project by Blair in his own constituency. It is tired and clearly needs a massive capital programme to change it from being a large engine shed with little interaction to a place that tells the stories of what the innovations in rail travel delivered to the industrial revolution and beyond. There is so much... More

Have visited this place many times over recent years and never fail to be impressed by the railway engines and memorabilia on display. The special attraction this time was seeing the Battle of Britain class loco Winston Churchill together with the restored baggage van that carried Sir Winston on his last journey in 1965.... was fortunate to have cab visits... We regularly visit the NRM Shildon and there always great events probably with the exception of the toy and collector fairs where there is nothing but inflated tat stalls. The model railway shows are great. The Lego event was exceptional. The steam gala is brilliant but they need to reduce those toy and collector tat stall events. Add some model... More

Was told about this place, so we decided to visit it whilst at Whitworth Hall. It is free to go in and has some interesting exhibits, plus cafe and gift shop.

Enjoyed a leisurely visit here. Lots of well restored trains and carriages. No dogs allowed - thankfully was cold so could leave them in the car

We've been here many times and never been disappointed, there's plenty to see and do for all ages. We park at the crossings a walk along the railway line to the centre. There's a nice kiddies park along the way. The trains are breath taking and there's always plenty of friendly and knowledgable staff to give you extra information on... More

This is a lovely, small museum with many historic locomotives, including Sir Winston Churchill, which carried him to his funeral. It is well laid out (although an extra loo would be good) and warm, largely staffed by volunteers who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. There is a small coffee shop selling soup and sandwiches etc and a large shop. There is... More

We found this museum to be very interesting. Some really good old fashioned rail stock here. The highlight was the Winston Churchill steam engine. The facilities here spotless. The coffee shop could do with serving much better coffee and give an more of atmosphere experience. Place ideal for children and plenty to do. If it's cold you are cut of... More

Perhaps because this is out in the sticks I expected a much more low key venture, but this is a top class venue. The building is ultra modern and large enough to hold an impressive collection of locomotives, carriages etc as well as meeting rooms, play areas for kids, and a decent restaurant. It's not as big as the one... More

Huge display of trains. From the carriage that carried the body of Winston Churchill to a snow plough! Plenty to do for children. Good parking, not busy but it was February. A little out of the way so you do have to make a trip here, on the edge of an area of housing, not quite where you expect! Very... More
