Not a Place, But a Well-Interpreted Historical Event

The Battle of Westport was a significant event, and is largely experienced by following a series of historical markers around the Kansas City area. Good for Civil War buffs.

We were looking forward to coming here. This was actually part of the reason for coming to Kansas City. This place has very limited hours, and then isn't even open when it should be. Complete waste of time. Also can't believe the garbage outside.

The actual Battle of Westport crossed the Little Blue River which is located near 66th & Swope Parkway. Not sure what they are touting at that location as that is the entrance to Swope Park....The real adventure for Civil war buffs is to put on hiking boots and access the river and wood area east of Swope Parkway on Hardesty... I would just love to visit, but when we tried during regular business hours, it was closed. As a homeschool family with seven children who planned this trip to coordinate with curriculum and made the trip down there just to discover it locked up, I found this very frustrating and unprofessional. We were disappointed, but hopefully we can try again... More

We started out slow but picked it up finding the spots. Sometimes having to turn around because we missed a sign or two. Unfortunately we ran out of time because it was almost dark by the time we finished with the Byram's Ford site which is in a deserted industrial area. Seemed like a great place for a murder mystery!... More

It might help you to read about this battle prior to you walking the trail. You will "get it" better. Nice scenery and information stations. We loved it and as a War Between The States buff, I truly thought it did a nice job! If you are traveling the country visiting Civil War Battlefields, you should stop here!

I decided to do the self-drive/walking tour of the Battle of Westport in Kansas City. In order to tour the entire battlefield, there are 23 stops in Kansas City and surrounding areas. You can print off a map from the Visitor's Center website. Most of the sites are just interpretive signs which explain certain aspects of the battle and campaign... More

A walking tour on your own is available with information posted on the trails. Not much to see, so it helps if you are able to put yourself back in history and use your imagination.
