Tallgrass prairies once covered more than a third of Missouri; today, less than one percent remains, much of it preserved at Prairie State Park. Visitors to the park see panoramic vistas of swaying grass and ever-changing wildflowers. They also may spot an elk or the park’s resident bison herd. The park’s visitor center offers exhibits and interpretive programs designed to inform visitors about the special place.

Coupled with a visit to the nearby Osage Village State Historic Site, one really gets a sense of "what used to be" in southwest Missouri. I'm no Luddite, and I gratefully acknowledge the gifts of the Industrial Revolution and Western Civilization, but there is an elegiac aura that hangs over this beautiful, unique place. The trails are well marked, the... More

People may think there is nothing to see in the prairie but that is not so. Prairie flowers spring up everywhere, the sky is amazing, birds are abundant and the prairie goes on for miles. The bonus of this park is the bison herd. They roam freely throughout the park and you can walk within 300 feet of them. We... More

We had a wonderful day, looking at flowers and wildlife. The folks at the visitor center are helpful, and the bathroom and literature was very helpful. I should have known better, however, about the ticks. It has been a mild winter here, and they are in full force. I wasn't prepared. The paths are mowed, but . . . .If... More

My grand children really enjoyed seeing all of the buffalo and the scenery. They got excited about the buffalo being on free range.

I love this place to take the family for a cookout or a nature walk. It has a small stream to watch the fish swim through. The grass has grown up over the years, but it is still a fantastic place to go. I love seeing the buffalo. Most times you have to stop the car and let the buffalo... More

This campground was not good for young children, we love to camp but this place was scary, there was a howling at night like a pack of hyenas. I am a camper but never heard noises like that before. YIKES!!

This is a good place if you want to experience what our ancestors saw as they first explored the Great Plains (there aren't many such places left!). Once out on the trails, with nothing but prairie in sight, it is easy to imagine yourself in the "sea of grass" that early travelers spoke of. If hiking, check in at the... More

My husband and I wanted to break in our new hiking shoes so we drove down to Prairie State Park. We stopped at the Nature Center before heading out. The Nature Center is small but very informative and has lots of educational materials inside! We didn't notice at the time, but there was a bison sitting right outside their big... More

I didn't get to spend a lot of time here, but I did take the bison hike led by a park naturalist and it was really interesting, fun, informative - everything I could hope for. Very nice, helpful staff, and while we were looking for bison we got some lessons on wildflowers and prairies, as well. The hike took about... More
